Driving Licences don't last until your are 70

Despite what you may have thought, you may be driving illegally.
They have expiry dates.

Never bothered with the new licence that has the photo on it, still using the original I got in ‘85.

Just had a look and that expires the day before my 70th birthday in 2031.

When I first read this I was miffed at the thought of having to fork out £17.50 to renew my license every 10 years.

However, when you think about it it makes sense, doesn't it?

They are photocards so, like passports, what would be the point of a card belonging to a 60 year old with a photo of a 20 year old on it?

Mine is one of those old green things.......I haven't checked when it expires....probably in 9 years...that is when I reach 70.

It’s just another Stealth Tax we didn’t see coming as it says in the link. If you have to have the Photocard version then fine, change it every 10 years so that the photo is up to date but the DVLA or Treasury should pick up the tab. The cash they get from selling Private/personalised number plates alone would cover the cost

Quote:

'The DVLA could pay for licence updating out of the £450million per year they take from enforcement fines or the almost three quarters of a billion pounds they have made for sale of cherished number plates since the scheme started.

You don't need to take the test again when it runs out do you?

No - they just charge us £17.50 to update the photo (compulsory)

The DVLA said it did not affect entitlement to drive, but was still an offence carrying a maximum £1,000 fine.

Glad the DVLA cleared that up

I did.

Though they renewed it last November for another three years, without making me drive around Wigan, and press a load of buttons and pedals when they lit up, like they did three years before that.

Miner expired on my 70th birthday and it didn’t cost me anything to renew it 18 months ago.
