CAIRO (AFP) - An Egyptian donkey has been jailed for stealing corn on the cob from a field belonging to an agricultural research institute in the Nile Delta, local media reported on Thursday.

The ass and its owner were apprehended at a police checkpoint that had been set up after the institute's director complained that someone was stealing his crops, the state-owned Al-Ahram daily said.

The unnamed ungulate was found in possession of the institute's corn and a local judge sentenced him to 24 hours in prison. The man who had his ass thrown in jail got off with a fine of 50 Egyptian pounds (nine dollars, six euros).

Stupid laws some countries have :) obvious the donkey was a get away vehicle(Sort of LOL).And the owner only gets a small fine :) At first though I thought it was a thread about Tony(Donkey)Adams Ex-Arsenal LOL :D

Having visited Cairo, and been driven through it in a taxi, I'd guess that poor little donkey had 24 hours of sheer bliss in prison. It was heartbreaking to see the poor donkeys pulling carts loaded 6' high with bags of god-knows-what, plus the whip-wielding owner and all his family, along Cairo's horrendous roads where traffic drove 4 abreast at an average of 60 mph.

I hope lots of Egyptian donkeys hear about it and get themselves sentenced to prison. It's the only holiday they'll get.

Pity its not a few decades ago,Fred Pontin or Billy Butlin would have made a mint opening a donkey prison :D

With good behavior it could be out in 12 Hrs.Hardly a good example to set to other criminally minded Donkeys.

Will it be tagged?
Can the authorities give us some assurances that it will not re-offend?
