Blackburn Road Closed

Blackburn Road is closed, there is a fire. It looks like it is a factory just on the left after Church traffic lights. Plenty of emergency services present

D'oh you beat me to it! Just had a call from Busman who is on his way to Blackburn to pick our Emzie up. He says it's a big un, lots of fire appliances and one of those tall things.

Sounds like the pigeons will have to find a new home now. I wonder what the cause was. Squatters or tramp maybe?

So--- another victim of the change in the law on the charging of business rates
... which is ... if it's usable, it's taxable
Burning the roof off is a way of avoiding business rates.
If I recall right, this is the 3rd empty building which has gone up in flames in recent weeks

Just had to let Anne know about this as she is working at the nursing home just the other side of all this.

Empty premises used to be exempt from business rates - that changed this year

Cheaper to burn a place down -----and better sense -collect some insurance, if there is any

It doesn't unless you head towards the Cricket Club ! ( failing that keep going straight up Burnley rd and away from Accy all together !)

You can always keep going and end up in Haworth, a damn sight nicer !
Anyway back to thread, the sooner that whole corner is flattened the better !

some firemen were using the back alley by the old sub post office, so i assume it was the backend of the building were the fire was.

Is it the building that has a yard with gates on just down the side of the old post office? Its a builders yard I think.

the one next to the tools hire place i think

they should've sorted that area out long ago - it just needs knockin down - jsut leave a lawn on it if need be.

commercial, the building next to it, across the road post office and the few next to that and the derelict factories all need to be taken down.

ah, the building next to the bus stop, i hope the bus stop burnt down too, that was the tattiest bus stop i've ever seen

The building directly across the road from where the fire was (two buildings down from the commercial) is actually a three storey wedding outfitters, and I know for a fact they've spent thousands on that building in the past 4 years (i used to work there!!), trying to make it look neat and tidy outside as well as inside. They've worked really hard to try and improve certain things, but with so many derelict buildings and the council blocking useage applications for the buildings its very dificult.

WillowTheWhisp 24-09-2008 09:11

Re: Blackburn Road Closed

The Wedding People shop is an exception there and has been really well preserved/renovated. That one shows what can be done. But the commercial and the ruin next door with half a roof are a total eyesore.

MargaretR 24-09-2008 10:16

Re: Blackburn Road Closed

I have just had a hard look at fire brigade call out records.
There were 7 fires in empty commercial premises from end of Jan to date (8 months).
incident
incident
incident
incident
incident
incident
incident

but none in the 4 months before that
