But they haven’t actually won anything except the right to seek a judicial review. Now watch Labour try and wriggle out of it. |

Don't forget, this contemptible government had to be dragged to court to even get this far. In the weasel words of Jacqui Smith - the latest in a long line of incompetents to hold the Home Secretary's post - the Home Office will now review the other 2,000 cases. Obviously, if they had the slightest sense of decency, they would admit defeat gracefully and grant an automatic right to stay for these brave men. But they don't, so they'll look for other ways to slide out of it. Just watch. :( |

I know who I would give my vote to. I spent six years serving with these lads and never met one who I wouln't trust.....not only with my property......but with my life. :) |
Re: Gurkhas Win
agree with everything said before more power to them and good luck.

Re: Gurkhas Win
My dad, god rest his soul, thought the gurkas were ultimate warriors from his time in WW2. he would be jumping on gordon brown's head if he was still alive.
stop chuffing around GB, sort it out!!!!!! |
Re: Gurkhas Win
It’s a well deserved victory for the Gurkhas. Unfortunately I can’t see Jacqui Smith being too pleased, you can imagine how long the Home Office will take to review the remaining 2,000 cases. They will get stuck on the backburner first thing in the morning. :(

I understand that only 100 of these lads will qualify under the new criteria.
45000 of these lads lost for their lives in the service of this country. Disgusting and typical of this awful bunch of incompetants. |

Sadley though the administration is so wired up to cloud cukoo land and suported by the airy fairy brigade that they would walk around with there heads held high. Add to that the worst case of selective deafness around and we are in the poo poo. They were quite happy to have the gurkas bolster the British army but when it comes to the crunch they are treated like the dog muck on the bottem of their highly polished, expensive shoes. What do they think the gurkha's of the past were military slaves, convinient cannon fodder or both? Let them the pre "97" troops have the same rights that Commonwealth troops are afforded. The fact that they were based in Hong Kong has in my oppinion nothing to do with the issue as Hong Kong was a Crown colony protectorate or whatever it was and therefore British. Would they do that to any soldier that had been based at Gib if Gib was handed back to Spain? |
Re: Gurkhas Win
Sorry, dont celebrate yet.
The news only applies to men with 20 years or more service. The ordinary Gurkha can only achieve 15 years so it does not apply to them. Yes, it should apply to all Gurkhas, not just officers. Any British soldier will tell you the worth of Johhny Gurkha. We have a lot to be thankful for. |

Another great cock up by Brown and his cronies...deserving people don't get anything - disgraceful!!
|
Re: Gurkhas Win
this has been going on for years...until the Tories were kicked out in 1997 Ghurkars did not have the right to reside in the UK... the law was changed by this government to allow Ghurkas this right... but it was not retrospective and so those who left the armed forces before 1998 did not get the same rights... which is wrong and the Government should not oppose any Ghurkas having the right to live here.

Re: Gurkhas Win
i find it ironic that we allow peopel in who bring nothing to this country and contribute even less yet demand we change our ways to suit them yet when it comes to people who supported us and died for us we treat them so badly
are the gurkhas sure they want to be british citizens because we are at the bottom of the list when it comes to priorities |
Re: Gurkhas Win
We, the taxpayer keep the miscreants like Chindamo Learco(who murdered a headmaster),Abu Qatada........a whole bunch of Eastern European criminals(whose names I can't spell.....but came to this country with the express desire to commit crime and get a prison sentence, have a cushy life paying nowt, while learning English).....these aforementioned folks have no respect for the British, have not improved British life, have given nothing of themselves........we can take these folk in.
But the Gurkhas who have fought for the British cause over the years can be treated in such an appalling manner........the politicians who are responsible for this travesty should hang their heads in shame.....except that shame is a concept with which they are unfamiliar. |

I will probably get slated for this, but here goes. Taxpayers were losing money hand over fist keeping the railways alive as with the mines, millions of pounds lost and subsadised , not by the government but the taxpayer. Easy money from the IMF was not available then as the country was still paying off its debts for the second world war. The country was on the verge of bankrupcy as it is today under a labour government......spending money you have not got is why we are in this mess now. Some of us chose to call the Americans but if they had called the debt that was due to them on the due date, we would have been in deep crap. |

like i said to jaysay,i don't doubt that, i was refering to the plight of the gurkhas.

The plight of the Gurhas is ongoing and there is no excuse for the current labour government to ignore the claim of these gallant men. If GB can borrow money to keep the high paid nabobs of the civil service, then surely he can this situation on board.......probably I'ts beyond his Ken? |

Thought you might like to know that this issue will be before the Commons tomorrow. There are motions down from the main parties but some backbench MPs (including me) will be tabling an amendment calling for justice for the Gurkhas. It will be interesting to see what happens.

Sadly not in this case, abhorrent behaviour from the MOD, especially as one of these lads was killed only the other week. Fighting for a Country they have given their loyalty to, in a war not of their choosing but due to the pride of these people they'll dig in & get on. Disgusting
