I don't use credit cards and I don't have any loans and I bank with a building society that thus far seems to be ok; I don't earn enough to be able to save and would be up the creek if any of my household appliances died ! But as Katex said, real poverty is way, way ,distant from this and I hope I never experience it.

Some seem to be forgetting that this recession is global. All this harping on about 'our money being invested in foreign banks' is irrelevant nonsense.

We owned our house in Florida free and clear and so raised money on the equity to purchase the Georgia house and put the Florida house on the market. Now, we can't sell the house because of the slump. Our 401K's have been reduced this year by approximately 30%. Result, no retirement next year. Looking at our financial plan, I will have to work until I am at least 69 and probably 70. I would like to see the CEO's, CFO's and over-bonused senior managers of these failing financial institutions be made to pay back their last three years salaries, less say, $50K per year which is still a good salary for bosses of a failed company. I would also like to see the b@st@rds all in jail doing hard labour for the rest of their lives. Then, may they all burn in the fires of hell if there is such a place. Am I bitter................oh yes!

That's a terrible situation to be in John. Thanks for letting us know what things are like across the pond, keep it up!

How true. Never been in a position to even buy a property of my own, or save..never mind invest! Had to make each penny count all the time through my adult life. so this credit crunch is just the crunch I've been in permanently! :D

Wish I had a guinea (that'll fox the young 'uns) for everytime I have used that expression lately .. only due to the fact becoming a retired pensioner though.

Interesting poll on The Observer site asking if you have felt the credit crunch yet ? Does change from day to day, however, running at the moment of 56% saying 'No', balance 'Yes'. Of course, we never know how many voters, and what types e.g. political. ... :D

Please Miss, I know what a guinea is.

It’s one pound one shilling.

As a tiny aside – did you know that if you dangled a guinea pig by its tail, its eyes would fallout?
