I doubt if an academy for young ladies in Accrington would ever pass an Ofsted inspection ( or trade descriptions ) :D

A one in twenty seven chance of it happening seems a bit slim.

Although 20,000 students spending their dosh in the local pubs/shops, would be a very good thing for the area.

Preston used to be a nice place to live when all they had was a polytechnic...

You are right on there .... a university puts a hell of a lot of "dosh" into the local economy .... Queens University at Kingston, the oldest degree granting institution in English Canada, puts over 2 billion dollars annually into Kingston ... and the students, most of them well-heeled, spend over 250 million.:theband: ... there would be fewer problems with pub and store closings with all those students spending their cash.

An aside: Part of Queens campus is in England. Queens owns Herstmonceux castle in Sussex, donated by a grateful alumnus, Alfred Bader, who also gave Queens a couple of Rembrandts.

There are lots of benefits. Queens employs thousands of Kingstonians in non-academic jobs: maintainance, catering, janitorial etc. And these are well-paid unionised jobs, with great benefits. And there will be lots of construction jobs which would help out local contracters, tradesmen and laborers. Queens is presently spending in the region of 400 milliion dollars on renovations, and a lot of this cash stays in the community. Kingston General Hospital is a well respected institution, and one of the reasons the care there is of such high quality is that it is a teaching hospital attached to the university, and, as such, is staffed by top class physicians and surgeons; and it receives extra government cash. So, if Accy does get a university, the benefits to the community will be immense. Time to start bugging your local politicians to push for the university.

Hey, and I could apply for a job. Here's my application.

Dear whoever:

I was born in Clayton ... bottom end of course .... and I like Thwaites bitter ... give me a job ... ta.

Yours sinseerli

As Eric says, it would pump massive amounts of money into the local economy. Hull University President claims that we as students pump over £200 million into the local economy.
