Re: Can have something from under the counter please

I wonder what bad news the government is trying to bury whilst we concentrate on this latest government initiative?

In an interview on the Jeremy Vine show this morning the Health Secretary for England Alan Johnson stated that tobacco related health care costs this country £1.2 billion. He neglected to state how much the government took in from the sale of tobacco products.

He also neglected to state how much alcohol related health care costs not just the NHS but also what it costs to police the weekend drunks. Police who would be better employed looking out for burglars who take advantage of empty houses whilst the occupants are out boozing.

But then he wouldn’t because if he did it would destroy his anti smoking argument in one go.

I suppose that the next logical step is to ban fast food advertising and force burgers to be kept under the counter. And not forgetting alcohol.

It'll soon be easier to but ciggies from those souped-up cars you see driving round with blacked out windows.

Was driving along and heard this too Jambutty, was screaming at my radio "£4 billion put into the system!!"

As I smoke heavily myself, would not wish our future children to adopt this habit .. silly habit really isn't it ? Remember telling my own dad off for smoking bless him, only smoked 10 Woodbines per week at the most, but got caught up in it. Could help, not sure.

The only annoyance to myself would be to queue up at a counter only to be told they have none of my brand. Asda sell out of it regularly, but I can at least see if there is none in the slot to save me the time. Same with newsagents. Would I have to go through the diatribe of asking, "Well, what have you got ?" :(

cashman 09-12-2008 18:28

Re: Can have something from under the counter please

as we smokers are public lepers anyway, nobody cares hardly but us.:(

MargaretR 09-12-2008 18:41

Re: Can have something from under the counter please

The brands will still be displayed in pictures online.
I can't see that being altered because any delivery which includes tobacco must have an over 18 person to recieve it.

Re: Can have something from under the counter please

So this is going to stop people smoking how?? Certainly wont stop me, it was just cause more hassle and longer queues for the reasons the Kate said!

I think its just one more stupid government sound off.

How could the tobacconist in the market hall hide their display,
and the little kiosk just off Peel St.

There are some old established tobacconists in some of the larger
towns.

I think the gov will have its work cut out trying this on.

Retlaw.

Re: Can have something from under the counter please

We've had this "let's hide the smokes" thing in Ontario for a few months now ... it's just bs .... smokes are now about $8 a pack of 25 in the stores; but 'round here many people buy the cheap smokes on the rez (Tyendenaga Mohawk First Nation) :conny: .... they sell for as little as $10 a carton of 200, as the govt. can't tax tobacco on First Nations territory.:alright:

Re: Can have something from under the counter please

The current excuse for a government knows that come the next election they will get thrashed out of sight. So Brown and Co are laying down all sorts of nonsensical proposals to become law in 2010 so that the newly elected government will have a huge mess on its hands to sort out first before attending to the election manifesto.

This will give the new opposition plenty of time and ammunition to fire away at the government scoring Brownie points.

It is called playing politics with OUR LIVES.

Ok guys, let's take a quick eyeball at the world: an environment in extremis, dozens of armed conflicts, starvation, disease, economic meltdown, political chaos, etc. etc. etc. .... and what are governments concerned about: second hand cigarette smoke .... gimme an effing break:mad: Surely, we elect governments to govern, not to babysit. If people are too dumb to know what is bad for them, well I say TS:tongueout Like the signs that are appearing at train crossings: "Warning: It is Dangerous to Stop on the Tracks" No s**t Sherlock. Anyone stupid enough to stop on the main CNR tracks deserves to get creamed by a fast freight.:theband: And those stupid warning labels on cigarette packs: "Warning: Cigarettes Are Highly Addictive." Really! I wonder how many smokers have still to figure that one out for themselves. We are up to our asses in alligators, and govts. are debating methods of draining the swamp:p

They have started to put horror pictures now on cigarette packets over here Eric with pictures of lung cancer, etc., but what made me giggle today was a retailer who said that most smokers completely ignore them or treat them like a collection hobby ... as per cards you used to collect when you were kids.

Maybe we can set up a group on here swapping pictures of the ones we 'aint got ... :D e.g. I have got the one on low sperm count .. has anybody got the girl ignoring boy one whilst sat in bed next to each other ? Not quite sure why they are ignoring each other .. ones am smoking are duty free and printed in German/Dutch and French. Think can just about work out the French .. 'can diminish the blood flow and cause impotence. LOL

I remember a buddy of mine used to print alternate sticky labels that one could put over the real ones .... things like Warning: Cigarettes Increase the Size of Your Penis. Things like this show that people are not taking the signs seriously ... maybe the couple in bed are ignoring one another because they have no smokes and are real stressed out:confused:

Cashy.....are you Mendleson's advisor?
I love a smoke and am still here....many of my friends gave up smoking and are no longer with us.
Crackpot ideas seem to come from the likes of the beast of red ties, who claims his seat and tries to be funny. when he stands up and makes a right idiot of himself, it makes you wonder why these guys are paid as much as they are to to look stupid?
The Debates in parliament are broadcast worldwide and I for one cringe at some of the points raised.
Lets get real and realise that the electorate are not as stupid as the politicians think.

Yet newsagents can stil display porn magazines.

Strange old world.

Perhaps in future copies of Barely Legal will come with a sticker of someone with syphilis on the cover.
