Mixed hospital wards

Surprised no one has brought this up already. As some one who has spent more than their fare share of time in hospital, I have to say that I've only ever been on a single sex ward once, that was in Burnley Marsden, I think it was Bolsover Ward. I have been treated in 7 different hospitals and that's the only one. Having said that the wards have always been segregated to some extent women at one end and men at the other, with separate toilets and washing facilities. There are advantages with mixed sex wards though, if the nurses are busy, the lasses can always brew up:D

Only 58 days to go and you can go through the humiliation of childbirth once again, will the Father be attending? I was there for both my children's births so I suppose that makes it a mixed ward.

Re: Mixed hospital wards

I was in hospital exactly a year ago. For the first few days I was far too ill know or care who else was in the ward but, having refused to be catheterised for the convenience of the staff (a practise I found degrading and repulsive), I was going to the loo when necessary. It was while on my trips to the bathroom that I discovered there were bays on the ward that contained either male or female patients.

It didn't cause much of a problem except there was one old chap who was, obviously, not all there. Twice I went to a loo marked "female", unlocked, and found him sitting there with his pyjama pants round his ankles. It didn't worry me, the sight of one sad, skinny male body wasn't any big deal but, for all I know, it may have worried him.

I can remember my husband being in the same hospital, about 20 years ago, on a men's ward. One visiting time, the very sick old man in the bed opposite him kept kicking off the bedding and sliding to the end of his bed - naked from the waist down. It was a pathetic sight, quickly rectified by a nurse when Colin gave her a call, but I can imagine how distressing it might have been for a female patient if the ward had been mixed.

Patients must be given their dignity. It's often the only thing they can hang on to when they're in hospital.

I agree absolutely - what woman wants to share a bedroom with strange men at a time when she is likely to be vulnerable?

Margaret, now I think your playing the sex card.....there are a lot of forceful women out there who would love to share a bedroom with a strange man who at the time could also be vulnerable...what say you? ;)

Quite right, Royboy.

It works both ways.

I really do think that wards should be same sex only but these days it seems you've just got to be glad of a bed, to get out without contracting MRSA and beggar the rest. :(

My hubby's going into Burnley hospital next week for a knee op, I don't know whether the ward will be same sex or not but I'll just be glad to have him back in one piece.

Maybe not when they start getting free housing and don't have to go to work ;)

Anyway all maternity wards are mixed, all the boys are on the same ward as their mum's :p

Re: Mixed hospital wards

Any mixed ward would if it had to be used by a certain group would be hit on the head. One rule for one lot another for another lot etc etc etc. Can see the point of it though if say there was a shortage of beds in say male recovery and available in female recovery. It would be better than being stuck in a corridor.

I tried to attend the birth of both my Daughters but there was a big obstacle in those days, a 16 stone Midwife to be precise:D

This midwife was she in the way deliberately or just being an obstacle by accident?

I was with my mum when she had my little brother. People find that strange when I tell them but they don't understand how truly magical it is. It was a brilliant night :)
