Pay Employers to Employ the Unemployed

The government have announced they will pay £2500 to businesses who employ people who have been out of work for more than 6 months. BBC NEWS | Politics | Brown promises action over jobs

I originally tried to find a thread which I thought I'd created or posted in, back in November. Where the Conservatives proposed this exact same policy, with the exact same £2500 figure. It seems I hadn't posted it, but here's a link to the November article. BBC NEWS | Business | Tax cuts: just one piece of the jigsaw

Back in November Gordon had this to say:

"They can't show definitively how they can guarantee to pay for it."

"They change their policy every day, they have a new initiative to get them on the news, but it is not serious in measuring up to the problems we face."

Re: Pay Employers to Employ the Unemployed

how can you pay an employer when they havent got the jobs in the first place??? are they expected to create jobs?

so Tesco (for example) are going to create jobs that aren't initially there, just because the government are putting money into that business?

yeah right

this is an utter load of testicles

being one of the 'single parents' going back to work i know how hard it is to find a job when you havent been in work for such a long time...
i've applied for 3 jobs today (well applied for the app forms)
It is hard to find a job that suits YOUR needs, instead of having to have a job just because you have to get one.
Fortunately the sort of job/jobs i want aren't scarce at the moment

i cant see many jobs being 'created' due to the fact that the government are putting money into the 'project'

I should add that I am not convinced that either the Conservatives plan from November, or the one announced by the government today, will actually help. I remain to be convinced that creating jobs to create products for which there is no demand, or to serve when there is nobody to serve, is an effective method of solving problems.

They need to reflate demand so that jobs are created. Brown was right when he had this idea, just the VAT cut was quite possibly the worst way of doing it.

The country is in the grip of a major recession and all the powers that be come up with are half baked ideas like this. It is just their way of trying to deflect away from the real problems by shifting the focus

more people in work = more tax paid = less stress on the government

Pay employers to take on the long-term unemployed while still admitting immigrant workers (and non-workers) into the country? Somehow that doesn't make economic sense to me. :wacko8:

I fully agree with you.If immigrant workers were stopped and this scheme was introduced atleast it would be a start in the right direction although I dont know where the jobs would come from. Some employers could take advantage of this by introducing only tempory contracts. If it was properly thought out and safe guards put in place to protect regular workers and stop employers from exploiting this scheme it could be a good way of getting people used to working again

Gimmicks aren't going to create jobs no matter who's idea it is, like Andrew I wasn't convince when Call Me Dave came up with this a few months ago, but things have gotten worse since then and are far less likely to succeed now. For once I agree with Gordie, its no use keep letting more people into this country when jobs are sinking quicker than the Titanic, just allowing people in to mop up any new jobs or hanging about drawing benefits at the taxpayers expense is economics of the madhouse

Does this mean after 6 months I can employ myself and get a wage :D.

Probably not but I bet loads of people will find a way to abuse it. Another hair brained scheme which will cost billions more in administration costs than it would do to give people the benefits in the first place.

Why not just reduce business rates and employers NI then those employers who are genuine can actually decide for themselves if they actually have real jobs to offer and their business can afford it without getting some adult YTS person in to sweep the floor for the sake of it.
