Bus Shelters Or Lack Of!!!

Why have we got these silly bus shelters dotted about that offer no protection from the elements? Not everybody drives or can afford to use taxis all the time, so why did HBC in their wisdom decide to opt for these half shelters? They are about as much use as a chocolate fireguard, just a front and two tiny sides with a bit of a roof on them. Surely we could have had proper shelters instead of these stupid things:mad:

Do they look like this but with little sides on? Not a lot of use in a howling gale or when it's raining cats and dogs.

That's what we have here.

They all now have the name of the stop written on the side. Some of them completely baffle me as I've never heard of the places the stops are named after.

Yes very much like those Westender, at some stops there are proper shelters but quite a lot have these. The wind was very strong tonight and I was frozen.

I think it is just a matter of keeping costs down - they are less likely to be vandalised - fewer surfaces for graffiti and fewer clear panels to smash.
It does tend to defeat the object of having a shelter in the first place - a big umbrella would do as much

What would you suggest...and who would pay for them?

Well shelter that actually offer protection from the wind and rain would be a good idea;) There are some proper shelters but a lot are as I said, as much use as a chocolate fire guard:(

Suppose is a compromise between a 'bit' of protection Bernie, or to stop hiding people who wish to pee in the corner .. :(

Re: Bus Shelters Or Lack Of!!!

Its Lancashire county council who have replaced all the bus stops. When they replaced the one outside my house i had a go at our county councillor and he said first how many times have you stood in that shelter with no glass in it, how many times has someone been sick in it, how many times has a bus gone past and not seen you stood there. They replaced all the shelters with the same type just different colours and so it would be easier to replace the glass etc also theres seats in the new ones, plus at one stage they were talking about putting electronic signs in them ... telling you when the next bus will be at that bus stop ... He also said the bus stops have to be big enough to let wheelchairs in ... the old ones where all different types that wheelchairs couldnt fit in and also the glass wasnt always glass and different sizes.

I know its LCC but most people do think its HBC.

Your County Councillor sounds a bit dim. All those reasons for putting up new shelters are valid but not one for not putting up decent ones.

Re: Bus Shelters Or Lack Of!!!

If you go to the LCC website and type in bus shelter in their search engine that will bring up a nice big list ... they sent questionnaires out ..... and 7% of people in hyndburn returned them ... equals 76 people ... rossendale it was 69 returned equalling 7% of the population ...

Re: Bus Shelters Or Lack Of!!!

Ok looks like I owe HBC an apology but LCC sure aren't helping the fight to get more people to use public transport with these ridiculous non-shelters! First I heard of a questionnaire but common sense tells you these things are a waste of space. Another thing why are there decent shelters at some stops and these excuses at others? Sort of blows LCC's excuse for going with the cheaper option out of the water

If you are drunk enough you just pee in the street ... one of the advantages of being male:D

As an afterthought: Poison Ivy is not a problem either.

Re: Bus Shelters Or Lack Of!!!

Might have something to do with the cost ... have just had a rough guess on how many bus stops between accrington and rawtenstall ... that have been replaced ... 60 bus stops (going both ways). Then you add in all the other bus stops and plus all the ones going through to the boundary with rochdale ... And just think how many bus stops there are in hyndburn to replace.
