Cancer Care Fundraising
 

Hi everybody,

I know I haven't been around very much recently (term 2 is killing me) but I wanted to ask your opinion on something which presumably very close to most people.

Basically I'm going to spend February fundraising for Cancer Care. I've selected Cancer Care because of the support it offers to a wide range of people, from those suffering from cancer to the families who are caring for or have lost their loved ones due to cancer. It works really hard to ensure that nobody is left on their own to deal with the effects of cancer and I think it is a really important organisation.

Now I have access to a gunge tank at university that I may be able to use, and I have access to equipment to set up a bit of a soup kitchen, but I was wondering if you can think of any other fantastic fundraising events that you might have been to in the past that you think I could simulate at Uni. Obviously I have lots of students who I can contact to help raise money and awareness and I'm hoping I could perhaps organise a few small activities to raise a good amount of money and/or a big event.

So do you have any ideas? And do you think this is an important cause?

(p.s. I know this is perhaps better suited to Q&A but I think it is a good issue to discuss too and this section of the forum seems to get more attention!)

Brilliant cause, but apart from car wash/valet cannot think of any ideas, but good luck anyway.

No ideas for fund raising but a brilliant cause. Anything that helps cancer patients and their carers is worth backing IMHO. The journey can be long and frightening and having somebody to take the burden away even for a short time would be great.

A car wash wouldn't be making good use of all the students I have access to really as the majority don't have cars and there isn't really anywhere in lancaster where we could set that up and really get much money from it.

Brilliant idea blazey, hope you make a lot of money with your efforts, in my opinion there is no more deserving charities than cancer care. Myself I'm a patron of the Christy but all cancer charities are more than worthwhile, kalma on its way

What about a 'Top Swap'.....this is a bit like a Bring and Buy Sale........you bring along a top or a shirt/Tshirt and you give yours for free and buy one from someone else.
You could make it a big party.........best plan it for a weekend, let it run all day.....and you should make a bit of the folding stuff.
Who knows, you might even get businesses to donate Tshirts......canvas local sportsmen to donate a signed Tshirt...publicise the event in the local free paper.
I hope you do very well in your fundraising...it is a very worthy cause.

iof you donate the top you are wearing at the time you might get more people there ;) ;)

You could even call it tops and Bottles....get everyone to bring a bottle of plonk or some beer....and you have yourself a party.

Quiz Night in the local pub, and a raffle with prizes donated by local firms. 4 bottles of wine for the winners ... booby prize for the losers .. cheap jokey things from the £1 shop.

Treasure hunt on foot - Work out a pile of clues for places round the uni or lancaster and they have to go round them ... need people to be there to sign their paper that theyve been or give them the next clue ... and set em off. Prize for the winner and booby prize for the loser.

Race Night with a difference ........ Instead of having a proper horse race ... mark out a course on a dance floor about 25 squares long ... 6 horses made out of brush handles and horses head out of paper ... 2 big dice and 1 dice is the horse number that moves the other dice is how many moves it makes. Sell the horses, take betting for the horses eg sell a raffle ticket for a quid each. You need someone to work out the odds for the horses ...

Its a good cause.

just curious , but do you get college credits for this towards your degree in lieu of 'book-learning' for 'social/community activism' ?

No we don't and it's actually eating up study time.

The reason we are doing it is in some way for ourselves, because we decided to take part in a law competition in which the modules get released over so much time, we had no idea what they'd be before we signed up... and the 3rd one is to do something for a charity, we all sat down and thought of something that affects a lot of people which is why we thought of cancer, then we looked at local charities and which depend really heavily on fund raising and specifically target helping society as a whole rather than the 'primary victim'.

I am team leader, there are 4 of us in total and we are planning a quiz, something for valentines day and we're also going to take part in the charity's wider collection days because the last thing we want to do is just do our task and then step back from it. The wider collection day is actually after the deadline.

I'm also involved in fund raising for another cause at the moment which is raising money for Derian Children's hospice. We're all tied into the society RAG (Raising and Giving) at university though and do these things quite often, but this is the first time we have organised our own event and we want it to be special and raise a lot of money.

It raises the moral question of whether it is 'good' to do something like that for personal gain (i.e. completing the module of the competition) but it wont hurt anybody, it will publicise the charity as we have to write an article for the law firm who is holding the competition and they will publish it, plus we're getting local press involved as we have contacts from other stuff we've been involved with in the past, and obviously the money will help the charity.

Yes we just want something for our CVs, but when the economic climate is the way it is at the moment we need to do everything we can and charities still need donations, and I imagine people are less likely to make donations when they're having to cut back. Students will always part with money for fun.

As for the swapping tshirts thing Margaret, there have been 'frock swaps' at university for £5 entry so yes that can be a good idea! I might speak to women's society and see if they'd possibly be interested in teaming up with us to arrange something similar for the cause :)

I don't want to sound terrible because 1. we didn't know we'd have to do it and 2. it is still raising valuable money for a charity that needs it and we're putting a lot of effort into it.

I do a lot of things at university and to say its simply for two lines on my CV would be a lie. The satisfaction of really making a difference to someone, be it an individual or society as a whole is priceless and I do many things just for that and leave them off my CV.

cant cheat either coz teh machines at the smoking clinic can pick up if you have so much as sniffed a ciggy

im sure if you speak to your local smoking clinic they can sort out when the people willing to take part can go for help together
