'growing your own veggies' (year 2)
Well folks, its that time of year again
i planted my pansy seeds this morning have put my potato's to one side to start growing their shoots before i plant them thought about where i'm going to plant my pea's too but...how do i get the shoots to grow on the garlic so i can just plant a bulb? do i put them in a warm place? cold place? room temperature? |

the soil is the right temperature, if you waant to start them early then you need to make them think its spring. Garlic cloves need to be planted at least an inch deep, so make some paper pots and keep them indoors until the weather improves. Hope your chest is better. Retlaw. |
Re: 'growing your own veggies' (year 2)
Sisters boyfriend manage to get an allotment last year and had some cracking crops out of it. Seems that in this time of dire economics a bit of home grown grub is ideal.
Does this mean its Farmer Flashy now? :p:D |

Re: 'growing your own veggies' (year 2)
Retlaw, i dont plant things in the ground, i plant them in huge tubs, i have planted the pansies in window box type things, i plant my spuds in huge tubs too, yes i use a hell of a lot of compost, but who cares when i compost it again for the following year, i am using last years composted mush for everything other than the spuds this year :D
|
Re: 'growing your own veggies' (year 2)
Ever considered using those non returnable builders bags for planting? Suposed to be great for a crop of spuds.

Re: 'growing your own veggies' (year 2)
already started my tomatoes and they are about an inch big: sweet peas and a few boxes of bedding plants: now I am running out of window space:
I do well growing the seeds and getting them into big plants.... then it all goes to pot, well it did last year... however try try and try again: got a good crop of spuds last year.... and my latest project is to make use of the space around my garden with some raised beds... So on the look out for some cheap railway sleepers.... |
Re: 'growing your own veggies' (year 2)
Well i put various varieties of garlic in last november and they are going great guns ( plus more for spring planting), i`ve had all my potatoes chitting since xmas eve( and i think i`ve got way to many)i`ve 2 onion sets ready to go and 10 asparagus crowns with a bed of rotting manure ready for them...mmm. all my herbs are coming on nicely, my fruit bushes went in last november along with my various raspberry canes, 2 fig trees which are budding nicely and 2 8ft olive trees which i`m trying to revive with some tlc and god knows how many seeds to propagate , leeks and carrots first i think..............
|
Re: 'growing your own veggies' (year 2)
....oh and my daffs, tulips and crocus are peeping out from the ground to see if its time......:D
|
Re: 'growing your own veggies' (year 2)
 clever arse ;)
now can someone please help me out with my original question? :D |
Re: 'growing your own veggies' (year 2)
pps ........if any accywebbers have any olive tree advice i`d be grateful..:D
|
Re: 'growing your own veggies' (year 2)
I`ve broken my garlic bulbs down into cloves and put them in a cool, light area in a tray with my onion sets so when the weather improves and the soil gets warmer i`ll just pop them in the ground and off we go....nowt to it.....;)
|
Re: 'growing your own veggies' (year 2)
Why don't you plant in the ground Shaz instead of the tubs?
|
Re: 'growing your own veggies' (year 2)
Neil, i'm lazy and can't be bothered digging up that crappy stuff they call soil, plus i can move the tubs about depending on where the sun is ;) if they've been in the sun too long, i can move them to the shade for a while (dont want them getting sunburnt) ;);)
Pipples, do i have to have some sort of green shoot on the garlic before i can plant it? |
Re: 'growing your own veggies' (year 2)
Nope...straight in and the shoots will appear, the ones i planted in november are firing up, even in this cold weather............they are roughly the size of spring onions at the moment
|
Re: 'growing your own veggies' (year 2)
so, i break a whole bulb of garlic up, and just plant it? just like that? no peeling or owt?
|

Re: 'growing your own veggies' (year 2)
Pointy bit up and a couple of inches down and give `em a bit of room...........oh and by the way is it just shop bought or seed garlic.?
|
Re: 'growing your own veggies' (year 2)

Re: 'growing your own veggies' (year 2)
WALTERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!
i grew EVERYTHING in the tubs last year without any trouble at all, planted the spuds in tubs in February last year and they where perfect by July now shut up about that bloody chest freezer ;) its gone and your not having it lol |

Just asking as the seed garlic is just a bit better for being pest resistant, my shop bought has done ok , The range had seed garlic for £1.99 for 2 bulbs and i think they had a couple of different varieties |

ahhh, might pop down to the range this week then, its literally a 5 minute walk from my house, i'd never have thought about buying veggie stuff from there (says her who buys her compost from the range and comes home with a free trolley in the car) |

They had seed potatoes, garlic, onions, artichokes, asparagus and plenty of spring bulbs, loads of compost, chicken manure pellets, blood , fish & bone, mini green houses, propagators.....in fact anything you need for growing almost anything, all at reasonable prices........ |
Re: 'growing your own veggies' (year 2)
i must take more notice of things when looking around certain shops
think i will wait till the end of March to plant my Garlic after reading that link that David just put up, unless you have decent roots on them already, they might not grow through the winter, you planted yours already pipples so you will have decent roots on them to grip the soil through the frost and snow (see i do read things properly) |
Re: 'growing your own veggies' (year 2)
Mine next lot will be going in at the end of march..............;)

Re: 'growing your own veggies' (year 2)
My seeds arn't going to be sowed indoors until late feb/march, iv got alsorts of flowers :D
Pity they dont have any flowers that cats cant stand, so the flea bitten things would stay out of my garden! |
Re: 'growing your own veggies' (year 2)
I usually think about sowing seeds in the third week of march , in a greenhouse . Don't sow your seeds too early , or you will end up with long weak plants , and it will be too cold to plant them out .
