taxi driver stopped me to ask how to get to burnley!

coming back from the spar with my papers yesterday morning and an astra estate pulls up beside me and the window comes down...the asian driver inside leans over and says to me..'m65 burnley', I said what? and he said it again..' m65 burnley' , m65 burnley, m65 burnley '... I looked at him and said 'no this is clayton, accrington' - he again said 'm65 burnley', I then guessed he was asking how to get to burnley!

now I was on whalley road at the spar - about 2 mins drive from champs funeral where you would go left down the hill and then on down to the lights, left to motorway..burnley etc...

I said this to the guy who looked at me blankly as if I was talking in fluent french... he again said 'm65 burnley', I again repeated the directions and he then pointed at which way to go...I pointed towards the lights and he said something in his native tongue and then said ' no signs I speak no english '..at that I gave up and walked away in disbelief leaving him sitting there..
so there we had a taxi driver who cannot speak english - any word of english that is of use to anyone nor could he read road signs...which brings up the question
How did he manage to get a driving licence and a taxi one at that?
I can only presume he was straight off the plane on friday afternoon from his homeland..
the cab company in question was Kings...no idea where they are based..
really makes you wonder whos in charge of these things..

theres a kings in either burnley or nelson. how did he expect you to give him directions if he doesnt speak english? assume you are fluent in punjabi... ( my punjabi is good enough to tell him where to go ;) )

You should have got his number and reported him. For goodness sake what use is a taxi driver who can't read road signs?

But the number on the plates must be registered to somebody. I don't mean the registeration plates they give a number out for each taxi that gets a licence. Surely this helps trace the person issued with the taxi licence so if he can speak and read English he is obviously letting someone else drive his taxi. End of the day maybe to long winded cos you couldn't prove it:(

the plate is issued to the taxi company not the driver. he should have an id badge though. personally i'd have sent him the wrong way, he'll soon learn to read road signs :)

Are we to assume that an article in todays press refers to all non EU citizens or just a chosen few?

BBC NEWS | Politics | Migrants face tighter work rules

No speaka de English....No getta the Job.

In Spain if you dont speak Spanish you have no chance of getting a job...unless it is with an English Speaking employer.
Taxi Drivers in Spain rule the roost and in all the years in Spain I have never come across a non Spanish Taxi Driver.

Makes you wonder just how safe you are with some of these taxi firms:
