Price of alcohol

What do you think about this?

BBC NEWS | UK | Plan to raise price of alcohol

Now it dont bother me ... orange and soda has no units of alcohol in it ... and its only in the annual report from the medical adviser but as it says in the article he championed no smoking in public places years before it was brought in. So it could happen.

Theres a good chance of that happening which to me is encouraging the problem not curing it. Not going to get into a bish bash bosh session over it but again like the plans for choccy a minority are making the majority suffer if this by a 3rd blue moon gets the go ahead.

Re: Price of alcohol

Well it looks like it won't blow over as exports in the Nationals this morning say that the Chief Medical Officer Sir Liam Donaldson is recommending to the government that alcohol in England and Wales should be at least 50p per unit, which means a can of larger will cost at least £1 and a cheep bottle of wine will cost a minimum of £4, once again everybody is being punished because of those who can't act responsibly:(

Plan B is in operation,we are all going into the Home Brew market just as soon as Less's potatoes are in season.
Should bring the cost down quite considerably.Add to that the wine from the knock of grapes and the vodka still in the cellar I reckon we could start a new black market to rival the others the government have forced upon us.:mosher::D:D

PS The tobacco plantation is coming on a treat.

Here we go again, I assume they won't be shutting the bars (subsidised by us) in The Palace of Westminster and the smugglers will be laughing their xxxxx off at the thought of even more buisness going their way.
Now they are begging us to buy cars after 12 years of saying only Labour MPs should be allowed to drive.
Still on a brighter note drugs have never been cheaper, rant over, have a nice day

We are at loggerheads at the moment over distribution, nobody is prepared to stay sober long enough to make delivery's!

I'm for taking a leaf out of ASDA's books let those that want the darned stuff come and get it that way it's their own responsibility.

Taxation on alcohol served in a public house should be reduced and content % taken into consideration. Like Sweden. Alcohol to take away should have taxation increased substantially.

Re: Price of alcohol

For more years than I have inhabited this planet the majority have always been punished for the antics of the minority.

It’s been like that since your school days, maybe not so much today but in years gone by when the whole class was punished until the miscreant owned up or was grassed up.

Heck we even have a government that is in office due to a minority of the population vote.

Personally I don’t care what they do about alcohol – I don’t use it. In fact it could be argued that it is payback time for all those bigoted none-smoking drinkers who joined the “ban smoking in pubs” campaign.

Strange this, if this had been a idea from the opposition, you know the ones everyone hates, we would have had no end of words like: scum, Bast**ds, Thatcher to blame' etc. However because it is the great party's idea well its okay then.
Glad I don't drink that much

I am sorry Graham but your response to the subject gives me the impression that it has been on the agenda for some time.
If this is implemented I think it will be the last nail in the coffin for this government, not by the yobs who abuse the law but by people who enjoy a drink in the privacy of their own home.....comes across as a mini prohibition and should be avoided at all costs......the same guy was responsible for the smoking ban.....whats next?

just hope the NHS has enough funds rat-holed away to treat all the folks who will be coming in for treatment for alcohol blindness/poisoning from drinking bootleg/home made booze , are these cretins in the Govt. hell bent into turning the UK into a third world country .....I can remember living in Africa years ago when villagers would "try' to brew thier own booze , (often including items like car batteries and dead snakes ). No matter what anyone says , the increase in the price of alcohol will lead to a rise in the production of moonshine/siddique/ rot-gut .

just an opinion

Instead of pricing by alcohol content, what about limiting the alcohol content of beer? Would that not have the same effect without costing us more money?

I don't see why the rich should be able to get very drunk without going in the pubs, but everyone else has to suffer from taxation.

The whole idea proposed by this report is daft. It'll kill off the remaining pubs, although the way things have gone you'd think it was in labours manifesto to do that. Punishing the majority because of a minority of people can't drink responsibly, is wrong.

It won't make any difference to the Saturday night bingers ... they will just have to decrease their intake from 20 pints to 18 ... still enough to get hammered.

andrewb 16-03-2009 09:20

Re: Last Nights Council Meeting

I add that the Conservatives also only seem to have half a clue about how to deal with the problem. They suggest it requires more than some price fiddling, and more a social change. They however, believe increasing taxation on high alcohol drinks aimed at younger drinkers and getting rid of loss leader promotions will work, and not impact on moderate drinkers. What a load of rubbish, people are not fussy, they'll just switch drinks to ones not aimed at young drinkers.

Crikey at that level their livers must be like pikled herring. Its that kind of drinking that has caused the problem we have today. What I want to know is what they really gain from it apart from a light wallet and a sore head?

I see that Brown is against pricing booze by its alcohol content.

Well he would be wouldn’t he? He enjoys his booze so he’s not going to make it more expensive for himself is he?

Brown doesn’t smoke and surprise, surprise he was all for banning smoking in pubs etc.

Absolutely no chance of this happening, because our real masters, the EU, wouldn't allow it!
