Radio ban

Where i work each individual has a radio at their station for their sole use(no-one else can hear it cos of the volume of the machinery). However this year our boss has said that the licsence fee the company has to pay will not be met(due to difficult times);and all radios with speakers will be banned with immediate effect. He quotes a fee of around £2000+ for the license, wether this is annual or not i'm not sure.Obviously the work force is not happy, though at the moment employees are wearing MP3's & the like..though to me these seem more of an health& safety hazard & expect a ban on these to follow.Does anyone know the ins & outs of this license fee or is he just trying it on.EG..demoralise staff so much they'll walk.Like you would when theres nothing else out there:rolleyes:

Not quite sure of all the in's & outs but would have thought with noisy machinery in the vicinity you may be able to use avaitor type radio headphones, I have seen them in woodmills and other workshops but I believe they cost up to about £80 but they come with a lifetime guarantee.:)

Your boss is wise to address the issues as the PRS (Performing Rights Society) do take a number of companies to court each year.
Offices and factories

I know your a union man Cashy but would the cost of the PRS Licence, if provided, not be a reason to re negotiate the deal?
If the employer was not aware that he would be visited by PRS inspectors and extra expense would be incurred as a result, does he not have the right to turn the radio off without penalty?

Have a look at this......The PRS will enforce it to the letter.

I prefer total silence. Too many people regard it as a void to be filled.
Silence is a wonderful experience - getting rarer.
