When you get yours dont forget a trailer for the little ones :D

What was this women doing on it half asleep?? Do think some of them need to sit a test before they are let loose on these things though, they can be lethal lol

Re: Mobility Scooters

Anything with wheels on the road is only as safe as the person steering in or driving it, but I do think any one who hasn't had a licence for a car or motor bike should have to take some kind of test to prove the road sense is up to scratch

Re: Mobility Scooters

What about the old man that took his on a motorway or a by-pass a few weeks ago, vehicles were over taking him at 70 MPH. says he took the wrong exit road by mistake after coming out of a supermarket. Luckily for him a local builder stopped and put his scooter on the back of his truck.

I think they are a great means of transport for the disabled / elderly when driven in the correct, safe manner.

my brothers dad used to have one and i missed out on many trips to blackpool as i wouldnt be seen dead in it lol

also it was scary to be in one as all teh holes in the road for some reason are located in teh middle of teh road which the front center wheel always hit and it felt liek you were going to flip over lol

Re: Mobility Scooters

Getting back to the mobility scooters, here in our area of Manchester, some of them are driven on the road, the people doing so, do not take into consideration the motorists, who cannot overtake them as our area is quite busy with traffic, especially buses, so you can imagine what it is like on the road if a bus gets stuck behind one. But i always thought they were neither taxed or insured as they are meant for the pavement only. Personally i think they should be barred from the road as SOME of the people that "drive" them are very dangerous as i have seen them manouvering towards the middle of the road and a car has to swerve to miss them.

Re: Mobility Scooters

:stop:Ive got one and its brilliant,,we dont drive so its great for doing the shopping,,i am very careful and mindful of other road users ,i keep well to the left so that i dont obstruct those drivers that think we shouldn't be on the road,,i always indicate ,(something that car drivers often DONT)i am fully insured payed for,,,and i have it taxed, which you dont pay for by the way,,,,,,,
Beware if you come to Cleveleys ,,its full of us loony pensioners speeding down the pavements:stop:

This is true. A few years ago Police were stopping old biddies in Cleveleys and random eye testing them, not breath testing, due to the high number of accidents involving pensioners. These biddy chariots should only be licensed for the use of registered disabled people and then only after a driving test. The vast majority who drive them are a menace and quite a few just overweight or plain lazy and shouldn't be using them at all.

Maybe you should stop and think just how many people you are offending with that statement yerself. I personally find it quite insulting. :(

My brother uses one of those machines and he is far from being an "OLD BIDDY" as you so called refer to them . Hes only late 40s sadly his disability means he NEEDS his and relies on it to stop him becoming a recluse.
He has worked all his life so cant be classed as LAZY or OVERWIEGHT nor is he blind . There are also many people out there using them in similar positions .
I do agree that some of the elderly that use them are partialy sighted and should be sight tested before being allowed to purchase one and also be given basic driving instruction after a certain age and esp if they have never driven .

My mother also used one before she died and she wast an old biddy either. early 50s very similar circumstances to my brother. infact she was the person who instigated the lowering of pavements around Ossy to enable easier access

I have met Granny Claret and she also isnt an old biddy but does have difficulty getting around, and without hers she would be limited to her home, so they also give people a lot of independance and rather than them becoming LAZY and plodding round the house all day long they can get off thier backsides and enjoy life to its fullest.

I may also need one myself in a few years time but it certainly wont be becasue im an old biddy, lazy , blind or lack knowledge of using the road .Nor will i be registered disabled. but simply because I have a disability that is slowly limiting me getting around the way I have always been used to. and im damned if I will vegitate because someone like yerself thinks I should. :(

what i can't grasp with these scooters, fer people that would be housebound not just overweight, why do the government not pay or help pay fer em fer those people, me mate aint 60 yet, worked all his life, not overweight, had to pay near 2k fer one of these things, he cannot walk more than 4/5 paces due to a rare medical condition. he says he gets his tax free every year luckily he could afford one of these, otherwise he would be virtually housebound, the government not having the funds is no excuse to me, they sure waste enough on useless unnecessary stuff.:(

cherokee 04-04-2009 23:49

Re: Mobility Scooters

I agree cashy, they dont come cheap and for that reason there are many that have become housebound. even if they were rented out by the Nhs or something like that .
I do agree that more conditions should be set for the users because they can be dangerous but they also offer a lifeline to many .

Neil 05-04-2009 01:05

Re: Mobility Scooters

I do think they are a good idea but believe the users should have to pass a test of some sort to prove they are safe and competent to use one. They are quite heavy so would do some damage if one ran into a pedestrian.

I also think they are lethal on the road.

As proved by the news story, the lady using it was not fit too. She was unable to control it correctly. When tested afterwards it was fine.

I actually think cashy that you can get one of these if you have the Mobility allowance component of DLA, not 100% sure but think I've read it somewhere, might be wrong, will try and find out

I was right cashy, you can use Mobility Allowance for a car, Powered wheelchair or scooter, just put mobility allowance in the search engine and there's all the information there

Whilst the majority of users are responsible there are still those who think that everyone should get out of the way for them 'cos they're disabled. I was once swore at by one lady cos I stopped to open my front door and she had to stop too!

I have just bought my wife a mobilty scooter from Millercare. There was a DVLA form in it to register it. I rang them up to enquire about the road tax for it and they explained that if it only goes at a maximum speed of 6 miles and hour (which my wife's does) it does not need taxing. All scooters which can exceed 4mph must have a switch so that it can be set so it will not exceed 4mph. They must not go on the road if they will not exceed 4mph and not to exceed 4 mph on the footpath.
If a scooter can do 8mph they must be taxed, daft bit is the tax is free and you don't need an disabled exemption certificate, what ever that is. They will give you a registration number but plates do not need to be fitted.
