How does one justify 7.1%?
In case you lot wonder where your council tax is going, other than in councillor's expenses, this is the answer:-
Hyndburn and Pendle council chiefs' 'staggering' pay rises (From Lancashire Telegraph) I suppose you can argue over the base salary level, but I simply cannot see how the 7.1% rise can be defended in today's climate. |
Re: How does one justify 7.1%?
I don't know about Pendle, but Hyndburns MD has certainly done a good job, especially in regards to keeping council tax down despite the government giving us much lower than average grants. I can't however see how that justifies such a massive wage increase though when he's already on the £100,000 mark. Unacceptable in today's climate, any bonus for excelling should be deferred for later years.

Re: How does one justify 7.1%?
Wrong, wrong, wrong.
Their, and all public servants pay rises should be no more than inflation. |
Re: How does one justify 7.1%?
Mmm, I've thought whether I should post on this thread and decided that I won't hide on it.
I got 6% this year... that was based purely on the fact that I got a very good review, my salary is compared to comparative roles in teh Industry I work and teh fact that we announced good profits. Should I have been penalised with less because of the fact some other Banks aren't performing as well as we do or the fact I am obviously a asset to teh company? It may sound really capitalistic but I work hard ( Very hard in fact) in a VERY specialised area of which I'm considered expert, managing services that churn > 300 BILLION pounds a day. Why shouldn't I get a decent pay rise? Now back to teh man in Q, Andrew has alluded to his very good performance, I wouldn't be surprised if its not in his contract what he would get based on performance so why shouldn't he get it if he hits his targets? Yes, 100K is a lot of money, teh adage pay peanuts get monkeys springs to mind, look at teh other thread about all teh bickering in teh council over declaring interests, quite simply we don't employ experts in this field, only people who make their way through teh ranks to hopefully some position of power WITH NO FORMAL QUALIFICATIONS OR EVEN A TESTED HISTORY. Think about it, we trust our borough to a bunch of under qualified, non performance tested joe blogs...... and then we winge when we don't like what they do. |

Well I don't think you can justify the pay rise and I sure as hell find the salary very hard to swallow. Would be great to have the salary of a member of our emergency services to compare with. I just find £100,000 plus a very high amount and hope they have plenty of savings for retirement because my goodness are they going to struggle on the pittance the goverment pays them. As for falling ill before they retire they would never survive(unless they are paying into a private insurance scheme).

Re: How does one justify 7.1%?
I've no problems with firms in the private sector paying their employees whatever they see fit, but in this critically sensitive time I think the rises of public servants should be capped.
My biggest ever pay rise was when my salary was more than doubled overnight, because I'd bagged Diana Princess of Wales as a client. I worked for a private company, and my employer thought I worth it. I'm sure if fat cats in the councils don't like what they are being paid, I'm sure there are plenty of newly redundant workers from banking and the City, who'll glady fill any vacancies. |
