Hairy Angel

On Sky TV today Kaye Burley referred to Susan Boyle as the 'Hairy Angel
Is there any justification in that and why, if it is not justified, should she be allowed to get away with it without comment?
I cant say i'm fond of her at the best of times and the title 'Sky Dragon' comes to mind.
It seems that this comment will skim over the heads of the PC brigade and strike some as funny but not me, I would find this deeply offensive and I hope someone from from Sky will pick it up and point out the errors of her way's in public.

Re: Hairy Angel

I have seen Susan Boyle being called this in some newspapers.......and to answer your question....NO, there is absolutely no justification for her to referred to in such a manner.
It is demeaning and undignified, and the people using this form of address for this lady are bang out of order........and ignorant.
They do not consider the feelings of the lady in question......already she has become a media commodity.

Re: Hairy Angel

Royboy, why don't you e-mail a complaint to them, pointing out their ignorant and insensitive actions??????

lindsay ormerod 24-04-2009 19:23

Re: Hairy Angel

All the tabloids have been using that epithet for her for the last fortnight, it's not exactly flattering but hey, she isn't complaining at the moment is she? And now she has had a haircut it doesn't even make sense....

Re: Hairy Angel

Lindsay, because she isn't complaining doesn't make it right or any less demeaning.

It just shows how self important and 'up themselves' these people are.........and it shows them up as ignorant bigots.

Nowhere did I say it made it right, but let's be honest here, she must have a mirror in her house, she went on a tv talent show, she must have expected something similar unless she is incredibly naive. Not saying it's right, just the level of reporting we have!

Done that but dont expect a reply. Golden Girl and all that. :)

Re: Hairy Angel

Now Lindsay, I didn't imply or say that you said it was right.......I just made the observation that it wasn't right, even though she hadn't complained.
And as far as having a mirror in the house....I'm sure that she has, but living with the same face tends to make you take it for granted a bit.......and there is no artifice about this lady.......what you see is what you get.
It would be different if she had been twenty one and not made more of herself.......she probably hasn't got a clue what is fashionable in clothes or make up.......and remember she does live in a fairly remote place.

no it's not very nice...but then she's not my idea of an "angel" I reckon "swamp donkey" would be a better discription! :D

Re: Hairy Angel

Mancie, some day you will learn that angels come in all forms.....and your name for her is even less polite than the previous one.

And I know your post has a smiley, but that does not mitigate the contents one little bit.

something like this just makes me realise what a cynical and shallow nation we have become......we look at someone and make value judgements on them.
It just shows that some of us can see better than we can think.

Royboy, did you think she came from Blackburn Lancs?

lindsay ormerod 24-04-2009 19:52

Re: Hairy Angel

My point was simply that people who go on these shows put themselves in the firing line for public ridicule, surely that's why most of us watch these shows, to laugh at the majority of no hopers on there and to be amazed when one of them actually does something amazing. Fair play to her , I don't think she is good enough to win and to be honest if she was a size 10 stunner I doubt she would have got this far, we love an underdog.:D

Re: Hairy Angel

I suppose folk thought that about Paul Potts too.
Anyway whatever the outcome of the contest, it has taken her out of her village life and given her a wider view of the world......and maybe that is why she isn't complaining.

Sometimes getting your dream in life has a price on it.

So when you're taking your ma for a stroll and you come across a group of foul-mouthed youths wearing hoodies or baseball caps, their tracksuit trousers tucked in their socks and drinking from cans of Stella Artois, what immediate value judgement would you make?

Excercise extreme caution........persons who gather in packs, identically dressed, are displaying a tendency towards a primitive pack instinct ie. hunting.
Incidentally the same applies to football crowds.;)

I probably make the same value judgement that you have made.
Yes of course I do.......I have no nail holes in my hands........the foul mouthed bit does it for me........in a public place, drinking from cans, with two elderly ladies passing by. They are uncouth and rude, and probably realise full well that their presence intimidates people like me.

What you are trying to get at, is that we make value judgements on people because of their clothes....or appearance.

Same group as above but without the bad language, and the stella equates to a different situation altogether.......young men such as these(without the nasty language and alcohol) have helped me with Ma's chair on more than one occasion.

But there is a huge difference between looking at someone and making a value judgement in a situation like that, and the one where they give another Older lady a demeaning and derogatory nickname. It is very shallow.

. You are spot on Margaret about football. I'm a football fan, but it's essentially tribal isn't it.

According to what Miss Boyle said at the interview, it sounds like she ever had any reason to 'doll' herself up, (apart from her own self esteem), now she has good reason to try and improve her image, but if it suits her, then why bother? Because a few insensitive idiots in the media design 'pet names' for her which are not very flattering? At least she doesnt seem full of her own importance like some who are labelling her, and Im sure her family will be just as proud of her as any other would, I hope she does really well out of this, and has the last laugh on the media by becoming a recluse after the millions have been earned.
