How despicable can you get
I refer to a letter in today's Observer from Brian Livesey regarding the late George Slynn. To attack a man that is no longer here to defend himself is, in my book the lowest of the low. I was never a great fan of Gorge or his politics, but I would never have dreamt of an attack of this nature on anybody. Whats more I can't believe the Observer actually printing this very bad taste letter in the first lace, but this is just another nail in the coffin of this once good local rag:(:(

Will type this letter out for you Jaysay :-
'There have been several eulogies in the Observer to the late George Slynn. Your reporter went so far as to claim that Mr Slynn was a "passionate socialist", but socialists join the Socialist Party, not the Labour Party. Socialists have always regarded the Labour Party as being one of the imposter parties. Neither would a socialist stand as an Independent. Genuine socialism was beyond George Slynn's comprehension; by no stretch of the imagination was he a socialist' I thought it was unnecessary too, somebody else described George Slynn as a socialist, which I got the impression was just an adjective, not a noun. Brian Livesey was obviously using this as a promotion for his own party ! Utter bad taste.. :( |

Is this character still knocking around? I remember his "Citizen Smith" type rants from when I used to read the Observer back in the 80's and maybe even earlier. He would doubtless regard grief as a capitalist, bourgeois indulgence, manufactured by the property-owning classes to suppress the noble efforts of the proletariat to free themselves from their chains of enslavement etc etc....(yawn).

Yes, I thought that this letter was crass and insensitive too. Doesn't this man realise that George Slynn may have family in the area who are still grieving...or doesn't it matter to him??

Re: How despicable can you get
I think that there is always an argument for 'setting the record straight' but doing it in this way is crass and insensitive. If the writer had simply been correcting the reporter about their use of the word socialist/Socialist then that's fine.
The last line of the letter is unnecessary and shouldn't have been printed. I think the Observer should have shown more tact. |
Re: How despicable can you get
after reading the letter it appears to me "Livesey" is n insensitive ****** which will be obvious to anyone who reads it, n will have done his cause more harm than good, its also obvious the depths of a once fine local paper has sunk too, whoever is responsible fer vetting letters is as insensitive as Livesey, n would be better employed at the "Sun".:(
