uuuuuughhh!!!! Remember having tripe and vinegar as a kid at my Nan's house. Disgusting is just not a strong enough word, my stomach still churns thinking about it.. :s_sick:

Re: Tripe.

Is'nt it funny how the same subject can all of a sudden appear in two entirely unrelated threads at the same time? I'm referring, of course, to this thread and also the one about the England footy team & Mr David Beckham.

No matter, if you like spicey Mexican food, could I suggest you try "Menudo Soup"....it's a lovely spicey soup comprised of tripe, sweetcorn, chilies...there are several variations on the recipe & I have my own (which changes each time I make it) but I think you'll be able to get the gist if you type in Menudo on the search engine.

Tripe.. Its the lining of a cows stomach

Gobsmacked 01-07-2004 00:25

Re: Tripe.

The only way to eat it in my opinion is cold with salt and vinegar. Black tripe is best.

Tripe I remember having it has a kid, my grandad used to eat it.....No It`s Not For Me!!!!!
What I did like was Elder :) don`t know what it was :idunno: but it was good. Sandy coloured meat you had with lots of vinegar.

Black tripe, sounds offal to me.

Ceejache 02-07-2004 12:22

Re: Tripe.

Only had it a couple of times and I neither think it taste bad or good! It doesn't taste of anything in my opinion - you need vinegar on it to give it a modicum of flavour. It is cheap though.

Re: Tripe.

Way back I used to eat it, I haven’t had any for a long time now.
Its one of those kind of foods you don’t want to look at to closely while your eating it.
I much prefer it bleached rather than in its raw state black.
I would eat it again just never get round to buying any.

Weary Tourist 02-07-2004 14:47

Re: Tripe.

My father used to eat it with vinegar...but it's not for me.

Is it still a common sight in butcher's shop windows, or Tesco ? and what's the current price ? £4 a tonne ?

ShortStuff 02-07-2004 20:31

Re: Tripe.

Who on earth decided to take the lining of a cow's stomach, bleach it white, cover it in vinegar and then eat it??????????????

grego 02-07-2004 20:41

Re: Tripe.

Never tried it myself, but my Nan used to eat it with vinegar, always looked disgusting, dont think I'll ever try it but what does it taste like?

Re: Tripe.

Yuck, I worked in a supermarket down south 35 years ago, and we sold tripe, but now, NO ONE in that area sells it! I have noticed that the north "sells" obscure meat cuts NOW that the south stopped selling many years ago, do they know something we don't...

I absolutely LOVE pigs trotters, Do you have them Ooop 'ere?? They stopped selling them 20 years ago in the south!

Weary Tourist 03-07-2004 05:39

Re: Tripe.

Tripe is certainly something you do not SEE in the south. However, what the eye does not SEE, will be in the sausages, along with other choice cuts of meat from the lips to the bum...

Good book on tripe recipes, is, THE HISTORY OF LANCASHIRE COOKERY. BY TOM BRIDGE. 1992. Printwise Publications. Ninety nine ways of cooking and serving dainty dishes of U.C.P. Tripe and cowheel.

Weary Tourist 18-09-2004 07:47

Re: Tripe.

God bless Alan Bridge for helping us out here. With a name like Bridge I wonder if he came from Accrington by any chance.

Only ninety nine ways of cooking tripe, eh ? It would be nice if there was a dedication inside the book 'in memory of my dear lady wife for preparing and testing 87 of these recipes'

Made me wonder if tripe could be used in some other way.
Like removing hot cup stains from polished furniture....

Do you know of any other use for tripe ?
