Greg Pope to stand down at next election.

According to the Observer Greg Pope is to stand down at the next General Election.

According to the paper it has nothing to do with the events of recent weeks, but he feels now is the time to move on to other things.

Personally I feel very sad, as I feel he's been an excellent M.P. for Hyndburn for the past seventeen years, and in my own dealings with him he's been very approachable, very helpful, and professional.

I wish you all the very best for your future, and thank you for everything you've done for the area, and will continue to do until an election is called.

Your's will be very big boots for the local Labour party to fill, if not neigh on impossible.

Point taken Mr Ed.:o

I was in a hurry, and more sloppy than usual.:D

Sticking to an equine theme, I think it is now anyone's race here in Hyndburn.

Even with the present unpopularity of the government, and the disdain politicans have provoked because of the expenses scandal, I do think Greg Pope had a good chance of keeping his seat, because of his proven track record.

I think it's now highly likely the Conservatives could put forward a monkey in a suit, and it would be a likely victor.

I wonder if one particular monkey sees this opportunity as being third time lucky?

Well as I site here weighing up the situation, with a nice bottle of Chardonnay, Hand on heart I can't answer that question Rindi, even though I have spoken to Peter on numerous occasions over the last few weeks, even this afternoon, I honestly don't know. He could well be interested, there are few people who know Hyndburn Better than Peter, but as soon as I know who our candidate is, and remember I have a vote in the selection process, you will be the second to know Rindi

Well I can't think of anybody else in recent times that stood for the Tories twice and lost, so you can actually name some one without saying the name Rindi, that is unless you think the good members of Accy Web are all total donuts, that is:p

I for one was shocked when I heard this, I didn't see it coming. Although I may not agree with the ways Greg has voted on many an occasion, he has been a good local MP. He has always been fast and full in his answers to my queries and will be a hard act to follow.

Best of luck for what the future brings!

Although I have never contacted Greg personally my son e-mailed him a few weeks ago about a problem he was having. It was sorted within a couple of days thanks to Gregs intervention. Sorry to see him step down.

Me too Cashy .. I am a bit of a floating voter, and although I didn't vote for him at the last election ... think I may have voted for him at the next, due to past form. If the (ahem) one that is being suggested as a Conservative candidate ... will definitely vote for Greg. :D

Re: Greg Pope to stand down at next election.

There are people on here that think I'm a bit hypocritical, but I have always held Greg with great esteem, we could never agree politically but as a man and a local MP he has been good for Hyndburn. On the occasions I have met Greg we have got on very well, he's a thoroughly decent bloke and I can only wish him all the best in whatever he does in the future

I feel quite bad now. The other day was the only time that I have ever publicly criticised Greg and I've found out since that he had paid back the money that he had been accused by the papers of spending out of the public purse.

I like Greg a lot, I think he's been good for the area. I suspect that Labour will probably lose next time unless they put up an extra special candidate - mmmm, where did I put my Labour Party membership form?

Are death threats not a police issue? No reflection on your name here but have the police time; should you have posted a death threat here do they have the time to look into that? It was posted on a far larger forum and the forum did nothing about it so that was why I contacted my M P.

As an example say and again no reflections on anyone; I posted the death threat at you as stannaccywiz you complain and are told to deal with it and sent a note from say missusjaywalker who as far as you know has no connection at all with stannaccywiz so you ask and your question is ignored.

I did contact the police. Then I went on asking and was threatened with dismissal for keep asking so when later I asked about another topic; one that should have been something that charity should have been concerned about they ignored those emails; so I emailed again to more than one person; then I asked the web editor; then I posted on the boards. What more could I do? I did what I thought could help; I asked an M P who I thought would not be as ignored as I had.

This was a site for carers; I am a carer and that site showed not one scrap of concern as to how a death threat could have effected me. They had no idea what the state of my mental heath was; I could have been a depressive and a death threat the final straw that drove me over the edge into death.

So if you don’t know carers have one of the highest incidents of depression there is and as such that should have been in the minds of that charity and a death threat dealt with in a different way than saying “get over it; here’s a note from me granny”.

I think Neil made a quite valid reply to your original post Webglynn, any death threat should be reported to the police, and I talk from experience. I can't really see what you hoped to achieve in contacting Greg on this issue as with every will in the world I don't think that any member of parliament would be able to help with this kind of problem, it was definitely a police matter

Just curious ....Do British MPs engage in "pork barrel politics" i.e. bringing Govt money and jobs back to their districts as a way of winning votes at the next election , a kind of 'quid pro quo' .... I'll support this bit of legislation if you do such and such for my constituancy sort of thing .

I imagine so, there was a curious case of the DUP being 'bought off' to win the first vote on 90 day detention. It isn't as obvious as the American system, all behind the scenes. If I'm not mistaken in the US bills in the houses are altered to add these state benefits to them?

So the question remains ...what in his 17/18 yrs as an MP what pork barrel "fat" has Greg Pope brought to Hyndburn/Accrington ?
