Where are they?

Wasps and Ladybirds, I have yet to see any of them this summer. Bee's are everywhere but the annoying wasp is nowhere to be seen. I've been waiting to show my young son a real Ladybird but no joy yet. Is it just me, I would like to know if I'm the only one.

PETA one more really good idea hijacked by what you so accurately term "whackjobs" ... what next, humane treatment for crab lice:eek: So it's ok to bomb the living shlt our of Iraqui and Afghani civilians in the process of making them free, but the housefly is sacrosanct:rolleyes: (There's this Monty Python song going thro' my head: "Every sperm is sacred ... etc.") I wonder what PETA thinks about burly Newfoundland fishermen swatting baby seals with clubs:confused:

Narrow-bordered Five-spot Burnet
June - July. Found in England, Wales and the Borders. A medium-sized moth, forewing black with five red spots. Found on grassland, sandhills and woodland rides. Very similar to the Five-spot Burnet.

I think it's one of the above. What ever it is it's very pretty. :)

Re: Where are they?

Look on nettles for ladybirds. My biomedical science friend tells me there is some chemical of sorts in nettles that ladybirds are attracted to in some way (I wasn't really listening).

Plenty of wasps in Lancaster and my mum found a ladybird at home the other week.

I barely see them like I used to though. I once found hundreds once when I climbed over a wall in Springhill area, but they've built a housing estate on that bit of land since.

I blame the chemicals used to remove little bugs that they feed on in gardens for the lack of these cute little beetles. Swat a few aphids take lunch out ouf a ladybirds mouth. :(

I shooed one out yesterday too Sara ... they are nasty, horrid, repugnant, useless critters .. yuk. Think they appear more in September when they are slowing down a bit .. then they are a blooming nuisance, would never eat outside then.

Haven't seen a ladybird yet myself. Aah love that one of yours Accylass .. it's their lovely wings, suppose if just black, wouldn't be so fond of them, would we ?.. LOL

Daughter snapped one the other week ... presume somewhere over the Yorkshire Moors :-

Attachment 14183

Do you remember when we had quite a plague of them, and they were biting ? Had taken time out from business, and sat in a park at Eastbourne .. was pestered to death by them, think they were after me butt. (Sandwich butt ..before anyone says anything else.. :D)

Think Spuggie is correct re. the lack of aphids.

Why would I crush it? Then I'd have to clean it up. I threw it out the window after putting it in a glass and watching it struggle for a while.

Wasps are my favourite creatures in the animal world after giraffes.

Are you some kind of sadist blazey, wasps are nasty little blighters, they'll sting you for fun, had one in the kitchen the other day, lasted all of 10 seconds before it went to that big nest in the sky :D

Wasps outside don't bother any one until you get within 2 ft of their nest. They kill greenfly and feed them to their young. If your outside you don't need to get into a panic, just a wave of your hand will make them go elsewhere.

Wasps will only sting if they are cornered, or when the new queens have left the nest, the surviving workers having nothing left to do, gorge on fruit which turns to alcohol in their gut and makes them vicious.

If you need to get rid of a wasps nest, then I wait till its near dark, soak a wad of paper tissue's in meths, jam it into the entrance to the nest, light it and clear off quick.

If the queen dies the survivors wil die in a couple of days. The've nothing left to live for

I used to keep bees, they will attack if you stand any where near their flight path to and from the hive.
It can take hours to catch a swarm of bees, I used to carry a spray with sugared water, and when they settled spray them, they then become too busy cleaning one another, find the queen put her in the collection box, and once some of the workers have carried out the inspection, they will all move in, just have to wait for the scouts to come back.

Retlaw.

None here but then the wet start to the year ruined my fruit trees which would normally attract them, one peach which fell off and the figs have just appeared so no way will they ripen unless we have a nuclear Autumn.

Yes, they seem to be more prolific then Pipinfort, or bother you more. Read somewhere (thought it was on here) that they eat the fruit and it ferments to alcohol in their digestive system, and that's what makes them more aggressive .. they're all drunk !! ... hmmm, sounds familiar ... :D

Re: Where are they?

My granddaughter Laura, aged 9, was stung by a wasp at 4 o clock this morning. Her bedroom window had been open, but was now shut, and the wasp must have been lurking, possibly under her duvet. She was stung on the big toe. This afternoon her mum took her and a friend to a local play park. As soon as they got there Laura put her hand on a wasp, which she hadn't seen, and was stung on the palm of her hand. :(

The apples are beginning to drop from my tree and the wasps get drunk on the fruit, if I don't get it picked up, and become nasty little b*ggers. My solution is a jar half filled with water and a bit of jam or honey. I cover the jar neck with cling film and pop a few holes in it, only just big enough for the wasps to crawl in, and put the jar under the apple tree. Once in they are incapable of getting out and they drown in the liquid. :)

Don't you dare say wasp's are rare, there I was minding my own business at the Railway, smoking a fag, (got to admit, after the way Lynx and I had been adding to the research on beer and it's affects on the human kind I needed a smoke).
A scream went out, " Arghhh look out there is a wasp", I sat there over-confident as usual and said, "Stop fussing, leave them alone and they won't bother you".

Lynx then said, "but there are two of them under your chin!".

I looked at her and said, "stop worrying woman, they aren't a... Ow!" It was at that point one of them without any prompting or encouragement buzzed up and stung me just under the eye.

Both she and Dave1 took piccys of how the skin around my eye increased, while everyone else tittered and reminded me of how I was so confident that a wasp left alone won't attack.

O.K. I admit it, I was wrong!
