Stop teaching it in the future? There isn't much evidence around that they are teaching it now.

Ther are actually more words in the English language with cie than there are cei, of which I can only find 88.

As long as the meaning and understanding is there, what difference does it make.
I once sat an exam, it was supposed to be the markers would be unaware of the person being marked.

I was always getting pulled up for not using , . ' " ; : correctly. So at the bottom of my paper I put if thurs any o them fancy twiddly bits missin, heres some spares, and I put a line of them.

Two days later I was told the examiners had a right chuckle, and one said I know who that is.

Retlaw.

It's useless and inaccurate ... the main reason we are stuck with "ie" and "ei" is because of the Germanic origins of much of our language .... most grammatical rules are also hampered by the numerous exceptions, and exceptions to the exceptions .... I forget exactly who is to blame, probably Dr. Johnson and his crew, but the attempt to impose a Latinate grammar onto what is, basically, a Germanic lingo, had only limited success .... Next, we will deal with the moribund subjunctive;):D
