Looking at the pawprint to compare the size, it looks like it could be a basking shark......they are 3-4 feet in size.

Its not a Basking Shark. To me it looks like one of the breeds of Blue shark, which can be found in South Wales and Cornish waters.

Basking Sharks have huge great mouths Margaret for when they feed on the plankton.

I went to cleveleys on saturday, didnt get down the beach though, so I wouldnt have seen any sharks, except for the ones on Blackpool prom on the way past! :D

Having had another look at the photos, it looks like this was perhaps bitten by a much bigger shark, note the marks at the tail end, and near the head, almost as though something took a bite at it from sideways on.

Very few sharks are dangerous or feed on people - Jaws/Steven Spielberg has a lot to answer for!

Re: A Shark on Cleveleys beach.......der der der der

Basking sharks can grow to over 30 feet in size. I've seen these plankton eaters off the coast of Scotland numerous times.

British waters have a few species of sharks, with some of them Summer visitors. I'm nothing like an expert on this, but looking at the length of the snout, it does look like a blue shark. I could well be wrong though.

It looks like a dogfish to me. We used to catch small ones off Whitby pier, occasionally, but I've seen them washed up at Southport too. They grow to 2 or 3 feet long and are a type of shark.

Tin Monkey 21-06-2009 20:48

Re: A Shark on Cleveleys beach.......der der der der

Dogfish was the first thing I thought, so you may well be right.

It looks more like a dogfish than shark, can't quite make out the deatail. but could be a Spur Dogfish - caiught one off South Uist a few years back - that one was 5' - 6' long.

Tealeaf 22-06-2009 13:50

Re: A Shark on Cleveleys beach.......der der der der

Surely dogfish is a type of shark?

think it is a dogfish, they are the same general family as sharks but a different genus - see: Spiny dogfish - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
We referred to them as Spurdogs in the Hebrides, and the spines could be quite dangerous.
