Doctors/Hospital fees before NHS

one for the "old timers" or folks who have aged parents , anyone got any idea how much Doctors/Hospitals charged before the NHS was introduced .
Think maybe Accrington Victoria was built by public subscription , but who paid for the everyday running costs and treatments ? did the mills have some sort of employee insurance ?
Just think its a bit of social history that seems to have been forgotten
thanks

I vaguely remember that the doc did a regular collection of a fixed sum - now whether this was payment 'on the never' for past treatment, or a type of medical insurance, I am not sure.
My brother did have a serious long term illness in his childhood pre Nhs, but I was too young to know what was going on (I was born at the end of '42)
