Prom For Junior School Leavers

I see a school in Great Harwood had a prom for the kids that left this year. I think it is getting ridiculous now putting parents under financial pressure and making kids grow up before their time. Why do we have to follow the Americans with all their ideas?

Re: Prom For Junior School Leavers

I never went to mine. I'd rather sit and watch paint dry (quite literally) than sit with a bunch of people that I mostly didn't like and pretend to care that I was leaving them.

I intentionally went to Blackburn College even though everyone who was going to study A levels from my school went to St Mary's, simply so I didn't have to see them in their stupid cliques any longer.

Funnily enough, most of the people from my class at school all went to the same universities together as well. I'd hate to be stuck with the same people from school for all that time and never throw myself into a new situation by myself.

essentialy yes and also an excuse for those who think they are better than others or above others to blow ridiculous amounts of money on limosines and expensive out fits in a beat the jones's type kind of thing

absolutely no need at all for all the bumff of having a promm when a end of year leaving do would do the job just as well and probably not put off less fortunate people from turning up whos parents cant afford limos , fancy gowns and tux's etc

schools enforce school uniforms all the way through school life allegedly so that everyone appears the same and dosnt feel pressured to wear teh latest fashions etc then they undo all that by putting great pressure on pupils and parents to buy and provide everything that goes with been part of a promm

yeah im a miserable sod lol but im a miserable sod with more sense thant to spend £100 on a limo just to take my kid to school and pay a fortune for a outfit it will only wear once :)

when we left school all our mates signed our shirts with marker pens and we had an end of year disco which consisted of a dj, ciderkin and other soft drinks and a few sneaky snogs in teh corner or behind teh hall room curtains :D

its about time we abondoned american ways not embrace more of them

Re: Prom For Junior School Leavers

We have proms because there's no decent family TV content made in the UK any more. Bizarre reasoning, eh?

We import all the TV tat from the US, so after-school dance lessons become cheerleader practice and school discos become proms. Nobody decides to "import" such concepts from the US, it's just because it's all that kids see on TV, the concepts stick.

I do find it a bit unnerving though. At my child's school, they ran a slideshow including prom night pictures done by a pro photographer. The dresses and the poses were all a little bit too mature... These kids are age 10 and 11 FFS.

(It's not professional jealousy, either. There are three parents at school who are pro photographers, and only one can get the gig.)

(OK maybe a bit jealous)

Re: Prom For Junior School Leavers

to be fair most of teh junk tv has been created by the UK with simon cowell been the most guilty of all and then tehres big brother its as though theres a steady stream of junk/trash tv emitting from teh UK been taken on by america and other countries

sure america brought us jerry springer but lets face it even with jeremy kyles inbred lot they are still a long way off the standard of trash jerry springer brought to our screens lol

When they're 16/18 a prom's not too bad. For 11 year olds it's ridiculous. Let them be children, for goodness sake, instead of encouraging them to behave like little adults.

Yes I know but you were leaving school at fifteen/sixteen these kids are moving school. Eleven is far to young for all this palaverIMHO.

And what if they can't afford to spend stupid amounts of money but have a child who is upset because they can't go? Just added pressure for parents in these hard times IMHO:(

Agree totally Bernie ... haven't changed my mind since the last time we discussed. Then was only the 16 year olds, but hey, 11 year olds, totally out of order.

It's ok to say, "well if they want to spend this money then let them" but no youngster wishes to be out of step with the others, most are still in the 'sheep status' at this age (except Blazey .. LOL). Looking at the dresses for the 16 year olds, suspect none have cost less than £100 and will never be worn again. Half of them look a little like pantomime dames anyway in these over the top evening dresses (now I'm in trouble).

Not too bad for the lads .... usually hire an evening suit at a much lower cost.

It's not just another name for a leaving do .. has specked up so to speak. At least when it was just a leaving disco, could wear less formal clothes that you could go out on the town in on a Saturday night ... not like these dresses.

Kids hate to be different that is a fact of life. Parents are under enough pressure these days without this being added to. It is ok saying what you would or wouldn't do faced with the decision to spend on things like this but in reality it is different. Schools are not helping IMHO

I blame the schools for putting their pupils in this position to put pressure on their parents .... even if you say 'no' Ossywarrior.

It isn't easy to say no .. hek, what will you have to go through to get the message across? First the asking, then the no's, then the pleading, then the tears, then the tantrums, different views between husband and wife, sulking, and then the feeling of them being an outsider because they can't go, etc., etc., etc. Enormous pressure on all sides.

I think it's all getting a bit silly now.

We had a leaving do at Mytton Fold when we left school in 1994, we just wore our best clothes and our parents took us and collected us in the car.
It's all getting out of hand with these limousines and beauty packages........hair, nails, spray tan etc which are bing done for proms these days. :(
It's bad enough all this for leaving secondary school but to be doing all this for leaving primary school is ridiculous, in my opinion.

Graduation used to mean leaving university and a big fuss was made. That was fine, now we have proms for leaving primary, even 4 year olds 'graduating' from nursery!

What next? A certificate and mortar board from the Royal Blackburn maternity ward for 'graduating' from the womb?

I agree with West Ender.

We had a céilidh to celebrate the end of our time at primary school. Bags of fun it was.

Seems as if there's a total lack of imagination for this lot.

Primary schools should be concentrating on educating their children in the seven years they are there, which some fail to do, instead of organising this Americanised Lolitafest when they leave.

Totally agree with you there Bernie, peer pressure is bad enough at the best of times, I know how much my Daughter spent when my Granddaughter left school 5 years ago. like most people on here of our age group we made do with a dance, there weren't even disco's in our day:rolleyes:

totaly agree theres no incentive for kids to do well these days , i mean whats the point if everyone gets a medal regardless of what position they come in a race

some schools have banned playing football at breaks because the kids that are rubbish mught get upset at not been asked to play

no idea why becase teh fat kids got to play when i was at school we called them goalies, i guess teh problem is that in our day there was usually only 1 or 2 fat kids but these days theres too many fat kids and only 2 positions as goalie

Re: Prom For Junior School Leavers

I was the only one of my friends who didn't go to prom, and I told them that I thought it was a waste of my time to spend an evening with people I didn't intend on spending much, if any time with once I had left school. I don't regret making that choice. I also didn't go on the primary school trip to france which I also thought was a waste of money and I didn't see what relevance it would have to my education. I don't regret making this choice either.

I think what stands out for me is that I've always been given the choice. I've never brought home a letter and heard my mum say 'well that's something I'll have to start saving for', she's always just asked first whether I even want to go. I then weighed up the benefits of doing something against what I would normally do and then made a choice. No pressure to ever go to things that I didn't want to go to.

I think that what probably happens with most kids is that their parents just assume that they will really want to go so they can just be like everyone else. Fortunately I've never been one to care if I'm like everyone else :p If they'd encourage difference and maybe even a bit of rebellion in their kids, they'd probably find that their kids would be less likely to want to even go on the trips and stuff.

What a slap in the face, for anyone who thought you were a friend, to be told you didn't intend to waste your time on them again. You really don't give a damn about anyone else's feelings, do you? Unless, of course, they all felt the same way about you...............

Ya your right West Ender, we are going more like the yanks ever way you turn, its not that long ago that that Woman from Burnley was featured taking her kids to America to appear in these pageant competitions, it was her ego trip not exactly what the kids wanted especially the young lad

Re: Prom For Junior School Leavers

I find it hard to see what is so difficult to believe about an 11yr old making the choice not to go abroad on a school trip. My little sister is 10 and recently made the exact same decision. Children at that age make far more complex decisions these days on issues that used to be reserved just for adults.

On that programme on the BBC last night about breast enlargements one of the girls said that she'd thought of having a breast enlargement from the age of 11! If a child is capable of thinking about something like that, I'm pretty sure that any child could decide whether or not they wanted to go on a school trip.

Ask any 11yr old if they want to go visit somewhere. I'm sure they'll tell you yes or no.

Unless you're unlucky enough to have a child who admits to saying one thing, and meaning the other, or saying contrary things just for their own amusement.

In that case a parent would be unsure what the child really wanted to do, and may end up in a strait jacket in a padded cell, slowly rocking themselves backwards and forwards.

Yes, children do often lie about these things, but then they'd learn the value of honesty then wouldn't they.

I've no idea why someone would say something, when they really belived the opposite, even if they gave the excuse that it amused them.

Then again I'm not unhinged, and count myself blessed, that like the majority of the population, I say what I actually mean, and people believe what I say as being the truth.

I don't want to hear of any of it before leaving university ideally, and definitely not before leaving secondary school.
