I need a lookalike Mayor circa 1909
For the Coppice celebratory event I want an actor/local person, dressed as the Mayor from 1909, to walk up the hill and recreate the handing over ceremony of 1909.
So, I need help with two parts of that 1. I need to know what the Mayor of 1909 looked like in the first place 2. I need a volunteer/actor/local person to be him in the procession If anyone knows where I can find a pic please let me know. Thanks |

Re: I need a lookalike Mayor circa 1909
The list of the previous Mayor's Of Hyndburn, and before that Accrington Gayle are on a list in the Council Chamber.
As for the photographs I,m not sure. There are photographs of ever Mayor since 1974 in the Town Hall. Before that, I think that I've seen a book with photos of former mayor's in it. Again it will be in the Town Hall. I'll ask about Gayle. |
Re: I need a lookalike Mayor circa 1909
Have found photos of previous Mayors of Haslingden. The regalia appears to be the same over a long period of time without change.
May help if you cannot find a photo of Accrington Mayor? Haslingden Old and New... |

Re: I need a lookalike Mayor circa 1909
Just looking at the Jubilee book Gayle, there is a photograph of all the Mayors from 1878 > 1928... names them, but doesn't say who was the Mayor in 1909.. do you know ?
Have to go up Ossie in about 3/4 hour if you are around, can let you take a look. |
Re: I need a lookalike Mayor circa 1909
Not much help, but the Mayor in 1908 was T.E. Higham, so depending on when the Mayor making ceremony was, he could still have been Mayor in 1909.
Public art collections in north-west ... - Google Books Sorry can't find a photograph, but if he was a Higham of Higham's mill, his great grandson sat behind me at school, and he was small and blond. :D |

Well, we've got the first bit sorted. I've been sent a message from an anonymous source.
TE Higham was mayor in 1906 so the one you want is either: T.E. Nuttall who was mayor from 9th November 1909 to 8th November 1910 or more likely. J.C. Lupton who was mayor from 9th November 1908 to 8th November 1909. So, it's J.C. Lupton that we want - and I've been sent a picture. So, if anyone looks like him - the gig's yours. |

'Accrington library was opened by the Mayor of Accrington, Alderman T E Higham, on 18th Jan 1908.' lcl - - history of the library So either L.C.C. is wrong, or your anonymous source is. Incidentally T.E. Higham Esq. was also conducting the Accrington Choral Society in the 1890's. On the 24th November, 1890 he conducted Madame Fanny Moody in the Town Hall.. I wonder if the show ended when Madame Fanny sang? http://www.concertprogrammes.org.uk/...GetRecord/3805 :D |

So Mr, or Ms. Anonymous was wrong, stating he was Mayor in 1906 only. Matter settled. :) |
Re: I need a lookalike Mayor circa 1909
Another thing I have just picked up from one of Bob Dobson's books is that 5,000 scholars walked up Avenue Parade to receive a medal marking this occasion in 1909 with 15,000 people witnessing the occasion. Wouldn't it be great if we could generate such interest this time.

Re: I need a lookalike Mayor circa 1909
Those were the days when the community had real pride in the borough Kate....and yes, it would be wonderful to re-create such pride and interest.

A prerequisite of being the Mayor in those days, was that you had to have few bob. They would also never have let riff-raff like me do it those days. You would also notice it was an all male preserve for many years. |

I have invited all the schools in Accrington to take part in the procession in September - about 10 of them have got back to me. All the schools involved will be doing flags/banners, in the same way as we did them for the Oswaldtwistle War Memorial procession - it looked really good as they were walking along with them. I haven't sent specific invites to every school in the borough but that doesn't mean they're not welcome, so if any other schools want to send representation and bring their own banner they can do. Also, I'd like to hear from scout, brownie, girl guide, sea cadets etc - if they would like to send a representative group they are also welcome to do so. I have seen a medal and we will be giving out some sort of medal/badge (we don't have a huge budget so it may just be a badge) to all the children who take part this time. |
Re: I need a lookalike Mayor circa 1909
Gayle is it on the exact day the original procession took place?
|
Re: I need a lookalike Mayor circa 1909
Not quite - I think the original was on the 29th September 1909, but it was felt that the nearest Saturday would be the best time to hold it this time, so it's on the 26th.

Those over twelve would have been at work. Though judging by the reported crowds, perhaps it was declared a public holiday. |

Yeh . 12 eh? Actually, one thing annoys me at the link you put up for the HBC Garinda ... they talk about Sir Robert Peel, Primeminster and the police force, etc., but this was the son of Robert Peel ... who was born at Peelfold, Oswaldtwistle and did more for our area with his textile input and reform for shorter working hours for children. Also, Sir Robert Peel was responsible for forming the Conservative Party ... LOL. Wonder if Cllr. Britcliffe was responsible for this dedication ? |

Surely to goodness it can't be so! If only they hadn't wasted the £591,000.00 given to them for a community website, they could have employed a couple of researchers for the next couple of decades, to make sure this didn't happen. Costly website a ‘desperate failure’ - News - Accrington Observer Sadly it appears we have people in charge who don't know their Parsley Peel, from old potato peel. |
