Some women cannot relate jaw pain to a heart attack.
So while it is good to make fun of some things, I don't really think this one of them.

I think that there should be a concentrated campaign to educate women on what symptoms they might experience when suffering a heart attack, and that these symptoms are different for women, and should not be ignored.

I didn't mean it to be flippant Margaret, because as you said it is a problem for the reason you gave, but who better to beat the drum for the fair sex than your good self:mosher:

Saw this today and it made me think of the fact that young men are more likely to commit suicide, usually in the 20s....

and as heart attacks usually happen later in life than that...

I'd rather be a stubborn woman than a suicidal man.

I appreciate that Jaysay.
Women have a pain and they take a couple of paracetamols....when in actual fact they should be connected up to a heart monitor.

I am sure that the British Heart foundation do have leaflets aimed at women, but I reckon it will take a campaign like the one where the chap was having his chest crushed by a leather belt.......those symptoms relate to men.

The other thing is that many of the medications to treat heart problems have only been tested on men....so it maybe that the treatment that women get is not appropriate either.

Re: Are Women their own worst enemies

This is absolute rubbish. About 60% of NHS expenditure goes on women, mainly because they insist on having brats, living longer and generally receiving treatment which has no place in the NHS such as IVF and stomach stapling to remove the fat they build up from eating junk and doing nowt all day. You only have to visit any GP's waiting room to see that two thirds of those there will be women.

We shall shortly start having to make large cuts in real NHS expenditure; other than chopping bureaucrats and dispensing with clinical targets, we should cut expenditure on women to the save level as men. By my calculations, that should save us a minimum of £20billion a year.

Re: Are Women their own worst enemies

And where do you get your information from?

You mention two procedures specifically that women may avail themselves of....IVF and surgery to correct obesity.
I am not sure if you know the criteria that has to be met for either of these types of treatment.....but it is quite rigorous.

No-one will die if they do not get to have a baby.
Surgery to correct obesity may be life-saving....and this surgery is not first line treatment for obesity.

When you talk about cuts in NHS expenditure, I think that can be achieved by eliminating needless consultation processes that tell us what we already know......the NHS is top heavy with people who do nothing to improve the experience of the patient.

I really do hope that you are never in the position of having a female member of your family with serious heart problems......the problems which you appear to be so scathing and sanctimonious about.

But then maybe you know too many of those fat women who sit about eating junk all day.

You really do come across as a bitter individual. PBWY

Exactly. I'm no lager lout. Just the best English bitter ale every time. You should try a few pints yourself - you never know, you might end up talking a bit of common sense for a change.

But how would you know....seeing as you have such a blinkered view.

I think that having worked in the NHS for something in the region of 30 years, I am better placed to comment than you are.......and my field of expertise was Women's Services.....so I am speaking from experience, not the rather bitter and twisted viewpoint you seem to inhabit on every subject to which you post.

This is not true you can have a Heart attack at any age
the symptoms can start off very mild so you think its only indigestion believe me i had one and they are not nice mine left me with angina and an op to have 3 stents fitted which has eased the pain but left me very breathless and still get angina.
any chest pain should be sorted out as soon as possible even if it turns out to be indigestion better save than sorry

Totally agree mick, heart attacks don't take many prisoners, its only when listening to tales such as yours that brings into focus the need to phone an ambulance if you have any heart attack symptoms, its better to be safe than sorry

Re: Are Women their own worst enemies

The point is Jaysay, that the symtoms in women are not the same as those in men,(although, they can be similar....confusing isn't it?) and this is why women are much more likely to die from a cardiac event.

The key to saving women from cardiac problems is to educate them.
Then there will be more women who survive.....that'll please Tealeaf.
