Why Don't Drivers Slow Down?

Had to go to Liverpool yesterday to pick my grandson up from hospital and the way some people were driving on the motorway was disgraceful. It was raining quite hard and so there was loads of spray but some drivers especially in lorries and buses were speeding along like it was fine. Do they not give any thought to other road users when they choose to drive so dangerously?

I thought most lorries were speed limited so they can't speed along.

How fast were you driving and what time of day were you on the motorway?

this is true but some are limited to different speeds , this is why you get some moron in a lorry limited to 70mph taking half an hour to overtake anoither lorry limited to 69mph blocking two lanes of teh motorway or both on a dual carridgeway

or they take out the fuse in the fuse box that restricts them , some even disable the tacho graph so their misbehaviour dosnt get recorded but i bekieve its harder for them to do now but still not impossible

I would say Vicky was doing between fifty and sixty, given the conditions that was sensible IMHO. Lorries were overtaking us and even if they are allowed to do up to seventy that is to fast in bad conditions.

It was between seven and eight last night.

I am not surprised you had lorries passing you if you were doing 50mph at times. The lorries can do 60mph. The spray looks different when you are say high up in a lorry than what you see in a car. Don't forget these are professional drivers that know what they are doing.

Whilst I appreciate what you are saying it isn't very professional to cary on driving at sixty in adverse conditions just because lorries can. The more professional approach would be to consider the danger to other motorists, it would be dangerous slamming the brakes on at sixty surely? Problem is some drivers are just inconsiderate to other peoples safety:(

I doubt the conditions were classed as adverse, just raining with the usual spray you get when it does rain. It probably looked bad to you if you are not used to driving in those conditions. If your driver was concerned about the weather then she/he did the right thing and slowed down. IMHO you have to drive to your own abilities and hope that everyone else is driving to theirs.

Any HGV/LGV which was registered after 1988 and over 12 ton has to be calibrated to 90kph/56mph, IIRC 7.5t to 12t are calibrated to 60mph.
Just going on what has been said earlier, thing DO look a lot different in a wagon, you can see whats happening as they spray doesn't usually get so far up, I'm not saying its safe, especially when there is standing water on the road, you got to remember the wagons nowadays have got very good ABS systems on them that do work well, not like a few year back if you hit the brakes the trailer would have a mind of its own.

I've got a Canadian doing work experience in the studio at the moment - she loves this country and its people, her only complaint is that we drive like we "want to die".

She's also amazed by pedestrians, who can't be a*sed to walk 20 feet to a pedestrian crossing and instead play frogger* with their own lives and whoever is in the pram in front of them.

* She's way too young to remember frogger - it's the best way of describing what she meant...

Don't think you need to go any further than to drive through West-End and see the idiots go round the wrong side of the traffic island to overtake at....................speeds far in excess of the 30mph limit.

in fairness sometimes you have to go the wrong side of a traffic island because some moron has parked blocking teh legal side like on fielding lane for example

I have been overtaken by a young lad on Fielding lane when he went the wrong side of the traffic island. I suggested to him outside the Spar what would to him if he did it again.

He was on the M65 about to pull a Mini over that was doing 90 when he noticed I was catching him. :D

all vehicles over 3.5 tonne are required to be limited to 90km an hour, not 91km or 89km, that is 56 mph.

so maybe, just maybe you where driving to slow for the road and forcing them to pass you ?

ok here at rising bridge at the moment there are traffic lights as theyre digging up the road putting the cabling in for them offices across the road. Anyway these traffic lights are at the mini roundabout at one end and at the church at the other end. So come 3pm onwards traffic is backed up ... but ive seen cars overtaking the cars that are waiting patiently ... and come down the middle of the road to turn up rising bridge road ... theres a slight problem with this .. as one car found .. what happens when a bus or a lorry is coming the otherway and cant get through because the car is blocking the way ...

You know me well mate :D:D

Chicanes are fun as well

My current quest is to send someone the wrong way at the end of the M58. Lots of people use the left lane and go all the way round to the M6. The lanes are marked up but they ignore it to try and get past the traffic. I always use the correct right lane and will not let anyone in who is doing it on purpose :D

Funny you should say that - yesterday I was behind one of the other parents during the school (disco) run and at Portfield Bar, they accelerated towards a car that was blocking the junction. At the time, I thought "you idiot" but after reading your post, it's made me think that if other drivers don't act to make them realise the consequences, they'll continue to walk all over the more defensive drivers out there.

dont care much for spelling its an internet forum not a dicitation for a degree and my post origionaly said dual carrage way or motor way and nor did it say waggons were passing me i was giving out an example of how two waggons overtaking each other traveling at very similar speeds holds up traffic and blocks peoples way which i am sure many people have experienced:)

hope this clears up teh matter , everyone else seemed to understand the first time but i dont mind simplifying things for those who dont but i do draw the line at drawing pictures as my art skills are worse than my spelling :D

On my first test the examiner said he was going to ask me to do an emergancy stop, he tapped his hand on the dash board and I hit the breaks, there was a slight sigh from the examiner together with Jesus Christ, I didn't pass on that occasion:D

Re: Why Don't Drivers Slow Down?

On my first test the driving school car had a fault.
The instructor advised me to explain this to the examiner.
I needed to switch off the engine in order to select reverse gear.
This was unnerving to say the least, and I mounted the kerb whilst reversing, and failed.
The second test, I took in my own car and passed.

when i went to blackburn test centre .. i got the boss of the test centre as my driving examiner who had only started there 4 weeks previous .. my driving instructor was waiting with the other instructors for us all to come back ..and they told her that i would fail because this examiner didnt like passing anyone if they made a mistake .. you know you are allowed to have 5 mistakes not important mistakes like on the emergency stop etc ... in fact he hadnt passed anyone since becoming the boss of the test centre ... and the pass rate at that time for blackburn test centre was 33.5% he wanted to lower the pass rate to 24.6 .. when i got back .. i was the last one back ..and going through it .. i said can you explain it to my driving instructor .. and he said no .. got out of the car .. said to the driving instructor shes failed .. and walked into the test centre. The next time i went to blackburn test centre i got him again ... failed again ..

you can appeal if you think you were failed unfairly and 1 minor fault is not a fail.

I tried that accyman, but they pointed out that a dustbin stuck under the front of the car is not a minor fault:D

Took my test in Burnley in '62 ... after being real critical of my driving skills, or lack of them, the examiner passed me:confused: When I arrived in Saskatchewan, I just traded my Brit licence for a Saskatchewan one. Didn't have to take another test .... most places in Sask. you can drive for ages without seeing another car.:D But I did have to take a test for my motorcycle endorsement. Took the test in May, along with four or five other hopefuls ... just before the test began, a spring blizzard blew in. The examiner, who was the local RCMP officer, passed everyone, jumped in his cruiser, and took off. Visibility was close to zero, and we all wanted out of there real quick. Lots of room on the roads over here ... most people drive fast. And only wimps slow down in a snow storm.
