EU inheritance law shake-up could leave British property owners homeless | Mail Online

British citizens could have their homes snatched from them on the orders of a European court under a new Brussels power grab.

Plans for an EU shake-up of inheritance law will leave homeowners vulnerable to the potential loss of their property if it was ever owned by someone with relatives abroad.

Most European countries force citizens to leave a proportion of their estate to certain relatives, known as 'forced heirs'.

Under 'clawback' procedures outlawed in England forced heirs can undo property sales up to 30 years earlier if the deceased did not make adequate provision for his relatives in their will.

That means the relatives in France, Germany or Spain could stake a claim to property which has since been purchased by someone else in Britain.

I think Labour don't like us owning our own homes.

Am I right in thinking Labour stopped the MIRAS tax relief on mortgages created by the Tories causing heartache for many thousands of endowment mortgage home owners.

What is the point in not voting? You should vote for someone who would undo the mess if it does happen.

That means UKIP only - and we probably won't have a candidate

Am I right in thinking Labour stopped the rip off endowment mortgage loans introduced under the Tories, and made compensation payments possible?

No one can sign up for this because it does not exist..people seem to go on auto pilot and blame Labour for any "proposals" hatched up by some right wing nutters within the EU.

I think both parties may have screwed it up with Gordon Brown finally removing MIRAS which was probably the only reason why endowment mortgages were affordable in the first place

I know that "seeing" is supposed to be "believing" ... but I see this and can't believe it:confused: At least the NAZIS were honest; when they wanted Britain they had the decency to try and come in through the front door.

it just proves how corrupt our govenment is if you ask me, i bet my life more people want europe to stick tehir noses out of our buisness yet the very people we elect simply tow the line and allow teh leader of their party to sign treatys and agreements they know damn well their constitants dont want.Once elected we have no control over what they do for 5 years and they simply do as they please regardless of what the people who elected them want.

we cant even protest because its now called terroism if we do, well ok we can send stiff letters of concern but as for gathering in large numbers and making it very damn clear we arnt happy that falls under anti terrorism laws now so basically the democracey of the UK along with freedom of speech is shot to sh1t as the old saying goes

Yet another nail in the coffin of British independence. Expect a lot more of this now that the Euro constitution is in place.

I don't know how many candidates UKIP are fielding at the next election, but I hope they get a really high vote. I don't agree with a lot of their policies, but the big two really need a kick up the backside to understand how we feel.

You don't get praise for doing something bleeding obvious.

Labour introduced MIRAS. The Tories phased it out before Gordon Brown finished it off. The allowance was £30,000 but it was phased out in the early 90s in £5000 increments IIRC. It was frustrating to see the older generation get to double up his n hers before Lawson ended it with one allowance only per property.

No everyone played with it. Gordon Brown ended it but others from both parties changed it from man and wife joint claiming and changing it to only part of the mortgage.

It looks like a good example of both parties screwing the public and neither of them being interested in helping the public.
