Could be worse. A whole bunch of folks in Malawi could be farting into the wind in order to cover up the noxious odours and avoid the law. This polluted air mass could be on its way to Britain.:eek::eek:

It now looks as though this eruption is quietening down considerably.
In the first 24 hours it spewed out more ash than the eruption last year did in 40 days.
This is the biggest eruption for more than 50 years.
The Grímsvötn Eruption let Out More Ash in One Day than Eyjafjallajökull

Note that this is not the volcano that they were saying could erupt because of the one last year.

Different types of ash. This ash isn't as fine so it is falling from the skies faster than the ash last year.

Is that in the same vein as the snow which closed railway lines a few years ago, the wrong type of snow;)

Hate to disagree Jay, but jet aircraft don't have air filters and as they have very big air scoops on the front of the engine they are very susceptible to foreign object damage even heavy ash

Can't you use a pair of Hattie Jacques's old stockings, and rig them up to filter out the ash?

Come on, show a bit of initiative.

:D

To be fair, we had not thought of that one, though we had thought of turning the engines off when we encounter a ash cloud.

Now that's a good idea not only is it eco friendly (which would please the tree huggers) but think of the fuel that would be saved:D

A little bit off topic but my hippy friends are weird. They actually fly abroad to go to environmental campaigns in other countries. Maybe I'm missing the point of that but it seems to me that the hippies add to the climate change just as much as ordinary travellers. And most of them take drugs that they probably don't know the original source of as well. Hippies are a bunch of hypocrites.

These earthquakes have been going on all year. They didn’t bother reporting when a main bridge was washed away in July due to a possible small eruption.

The Blue Lagoon looks great.

What time does it close?

I've just grabbed a towel, and some budgie smugglers.

I was in Iceland a week ago, The Blue Lagoon is a lovely place, even when it is raining.
We had a few days there and I had the chance to drive around a bit, seeing a few Glaciers, Volcanoes and even the North American and Eurasian Tectonic plates.
The Icelanders are not too worried about any major eruptions in the near future.

I was so impressed, I am going to take Mrs BG for a few days in the spring.

Why not take her to see the other things you saw as well?

If you are going to drive into the interior then you are only allowed in some areas after late June (check it out before you choose your time to go).

New Island may be formed soon in the canaries as an underwater volcano, that has been going for a couple of weeks, may break the waters surface.

Great Photo -didn't realise there was still so much activity in the Canaries. My parents live on Tenerife - is Teide extinct or just dormant?

I'm usually there in November, staying with my best friends, but am going later this year.

Might hang on a bit longer. Check out the attractions on the new island.

Oh those islands are overrun with many welcoming benches.

So many, it wouldn't suprise me if they call any newly formed island La Isla de Bancos.

...and the best thing is, unlike all the mythical towns which surround Accrington, all the benches are free to park your arse on.

El Hierro
Still no new island but there are now some webcams.
http://earthquake-report.com/2011/11/12/32535/

Don’t get excited as there is very little to see, except a slightly different colouring of the water.
This could change at any time as there was bubbling there a few days ago.
Then again it cold stop completely.
