Well done, Graham Jones!

Although it has already been posted in another thread, I thought it deserved a bigger announcement that justice was done in Hyndburn this morning and Graham has been elected as our new MP.

He has a firm grasp of local issues and has worked damned hard to get that seat so it is every inch deserved.

Well done mate.

entwisi 07-05-2010 07:18

whilst i dont agree with your party leaders i know you will try your best for hyndburn and hassy

Aye, well done to the Honourable Member for Hyndburn & a bit of Haslingden. The questions that now arise are which side of the House will he be sitting on and who will be his boss?

Could it be? Is it possible? Is the T'shirt an undercover News of the World reporter?

Could this be the shortest career for an M.P.?

Will Graham be on the front pages next week stating:-

Re: Well done, Graham Jones!

In honour of Graham's magnificent victory, I have written another poem:

On a cold Thursday night in May
The people of Hyndburn had their say
On who will be their man in London Town
To support – or not – Mr Gordon Brown
So they went along and put their cross
(But not all – some didn’t give a toss)
And then came the count
The Tories had 5000 to surmount
Alas, it was not to be
They failed – miserably!

Now the man called Graham Jones
As left the opposition with lots of moans
Never mind – Tuesday he’s off on the train
(First Class, with lots of Champagne)
From Euston he will proceed to take his seat
And start to examine the country’s balance sheet
Which we all know, is not very nice
As all of us will have to pay the price

Another masterpiece, although I say it myself.

Congratulations from across the pond ... and when you look at the national results, see the bright side: if the tories couldn't win this one, with a lame duck (or at least, unpopular) PM, unpopular foreign military adventures, scandals almost daily, economy going down the tubes, unpopular immigration policies, etc., then you have to look at this as a Labour victory ... in the circumstances, your job as a member of Her Majesty's Opposition becomes all that much more important.

Thank you to everyone for your kind comments. I will work as hard as I can. To have your name added after Ken Hargreaves and Greg Pope is a huge responsibility.

Where is Graham now, anyway? Is he still in Accy or is he down here in the smoke? It appears that most MP's have already assembled under their respective party auspices. I do hope that that he is not going to back any Labour deal with Clegg and the rest of the Lib-Dem blackmailing scum. Far better to have 6 months in opposition ( three months of that will be a holiday, anyway) and then get ready for the October election which will surely come.

So - in the interests of transparency, Graham - if you're reading this, will you let us know where you stand on any possible Lib-Lab pact/coalition? ( call it what you will).

If he is not in Accy then how will he vote who is to be the next Leader of HBC?

Does he have to be at that vote to use his vote? If so Labour could be missing a very important and needed vote.

Err....I've already asked that question. That vote will not take place until 18th May....it's what's happening in Westminster today and possibly tomorrow that's important. Unless, of course previous information is incorrect and HBC meets tonight.

Re: Well done, Graham Jones!

I will be in London tomorrow, back here Thursday. They want me to collect security passes, be informed about the new MPs expenses rules and be shown around.

The whips via Jack Straw (who has been helpful) made contact to gather my view on the situation and my view was that was against a Lib-Lab pact. As much as I want a progressive coalition there were to many hurdles. Significantly the two parties did not have a majority and Labour has no leader and would have an unelected Prime Minister should it form a pact.

The District Council is finely balanced and is meeting on the 18th. Parliament may now meet the week after. I am expecting a letter this week confirming details.

Just goes to show how the Tory press.. yes I do mean the Tory press "reporting".. blatant propaganda... according to the papers Labour were promising the Lib-Dems everything, lock stock and barrel in a desperate attempt to cling on to power.
Graham Jones post just about sums things up... a Labour-Lib Dem pact was never on...there would have been an outcry from the electorate and certianly the media, a pact would not have lasted out the year. :(

One question for you, Graham.....have you been allocated your new office yet? See if you can bag one in Portcullis House, rather than the Norman Shaw or Parliament Street offices. Whichever - just make sure you've got a good, visible window so that people can see the Stanley flag you'll be hanging from it.

I have not collected anything as yet. Don't really want one of their laptops or blackberries. Didn't take any IT from County Hall either cept Blackberry. Use my own iPhone for everything on HBC contract. (excluding personal calls)

They have not allocated rooms as yet. I am thinking of taking on a researcher.Accomodation is the next priority. We have done a lot to wash up the election details and begin to plan for the future.

Yes. I am meeting Jon Cruddas soon for a chat. I hav given a quote to the Sunday Times saying I hoped Ben Bradshaw would put his name forward an that we had a wide, varied and thought provoking leadership contest.

I spoke with David Milliband who is an exceptional talent. The new rules on expenses are very bureaucratic.

Blimey eagle eyes, you'd be good at the scene of a crime.

I've downloaded it, and enlarged it, and am still unsure where he is.

Looks a bit like him, right in the centre of the back row, waving.

New MPs pose for their school photo | Politics | The Guardian

Would have been quite cool to do that old school photograph trick, and appear at both ends of the same row.

I'd have been tempted to copy a certain face, stick it on some cardboard, attach a little stick to it, and hold it up next to me. So it appeared he was standing there with the new intake.

It would have given his supporters back in Hyndburn some solace, that he had eventually made it down to Westminster after all.

I've downloaded it, and enlarged it, and am still unsure where he is.

Looks a bit like him, right in the centre of the back row, waving.
