NHS Reforms - GP's get the purse

It looks like the ConLibs have come up with some pretty radical ideas on NHS reform, the main one being the transfer of the purse strings to your local GP. While I am certainly no respecter of some of the existing NHS bureacracy and all it's inherent waste I wonder if this proposal will only serve to create yet another layer of pen pushers and bean counters while at the same time creating yet more non-core clinical work for GP's.

Some of you lot on here have more than a passing interest on this one so lets see what you think.

Well from my prospective the idea is, that by using my GP and the community matrons scheme, they are trying to keep me out of hospital, so I say more power to the GPs

my big problem wi this- in practice it sounds good, in reality theres plenty of useless ******* as well as plenty of good doctors, n power in the hands of a ******, is very dangerous.

I can't see this working at all.
GP's reckon they are already overstretched, and how many times have you been to see the doc and ended up seeing a nurse?

GP's should be concentrating on seeing patients, and being effective in their own practice.....running the NHS requires skills that many GP's do not possess.
I reckon it is down hill from here.
And Cashy you are right, there are a lot of *******, and power given to a ****** is scary...especially when your life depends on it.

I think(and I am sure John will correct me if I am wrong) Johns experience of the Community matron, in league with the GP, in keeping John in his own home...it is a good thing...so that is where John is coming from.......but it is a full time job managing a lumbrous beast like the NHS......I don't think you can 'bolt' it on to other responsibilities shouldered by GPs.

I am sure there are swathes of NHS manager that could be ditched without it hurting the service(as long as the government do as they promise and ditch the red tape and bureaucracy).
I would not have left the NHS when I did if I had not been under pressure from government targets and political crap.......Doctors and nurses should be allowed to look after patients......not spend countless hours form filling and box ticking......an expensive use of precious resources.

i think its a bad thing .... if you want a doctor its hard enough trying to get an appointment to see him .. so rather than him spending more time on paperwork .. and thinking i wonder if we can get cheaper swabs from this company rather than that one ... etc he should be seeing the patients rather than worrying if he has enough money to last out the month...

can understand where jaysays coming from .. but the docs and the community matrons would they have enough time to come out and see you ... they might be in a meeting to decide which new computers to get or which company to get some new equipment from ... rather than being out on the road and seeing patients ...

Re: NHS Reforms - GP's get the purse

This is just another attempt at cost cutting.. everyone can see it .. there's nothing wrong in trying to cut costs as long as patient care is paramount.. but this government are hell bent on cuts at any cost ..( and seems hell bent on spending millions on "reveiw boards").. we already know that most GP's are already under pressure.. this proposal has nothing to do with improving sevices from the NHS.. it's about saving money not lives.

It seems the docs haven't been asked yet.
They are self employed, and last time they were asked to change their working practices they managed to negociate a massive rise in income.
So I expect there will be no money saved if it goes ahead.

The docs will not be asked they will be told.. I'd bet most people go to the doctors as a last resort and will play down any illness so as to not cause bother ...we all know there are good Doctors and not so good ones... if and when this new system comes in the Doctor will have to look at saving money..they are not accountants.. is that wise?

well i suppose not only will the money get passed on but so will teh blame when things dont work.I see this as merely a way for governmentto pass over blame and wash their hands of accountability.

aslo i wouldnt trust my doctors with monopoly money yet alone real money. They cant even figure out how to keep teh sugery open more than 4 days of the week despite moving to a much bigger premisis and hiring more doctors

oh and with all these extra doctors and staff they still shut for dinner and havnt grassped teh idea of a two shift lunch

Re: NHS Reforms - GP's get the purse

Like everything else the success of schemes like this are totally dependent on how good/bad the doctors are. Having had one mis-diagnosis of cancer in the family by a GP I would be reluctant to put my faith in it but having said that will we get a choice??? If you have a good doctor it could be ideal but get a bad un and it could be another story.
