More Hurricane fun
Well, it looks as if Frances is going to slam straight into St. Augustine according to the storm trackers. I sure hope they're wrong. The damn thing needs to be heading out into the Atlantic rather than deciding to pay me a visit.
|
Re: More Hurricane fun
When is Frances expected to 'drop by' John?? :)
|
Re: More Hurricane fun
It's named after a lady John that makes her "female" if she wants you there’s no escape. Same as last time John keep your head down mate and I’m sure we all wish you well
God lad you must have some b**l’s to live in such an active area, you’ve got my respect. A couple of questions: How many do you get a year? How far you from Polk City airfield? |
Re: More Hurricane fun
Hope you come safely through this one too.
|
Re: More Hurricane fun
Ooo-er ere we go again. Batten them hatches down good and tight pal.
|
Re: More Hurricane fun
Frances could be dropping in for a cuppa on Saturday night/Sunday Morning Lettie.
One of the payments one has to make for living in a place that has over 300 days of sunshine every year I suppose Doug, there are usually 12-18 or so named storms I suppose and around 4-6 of them become serious hurricanes. Florida gets hit more than any other state but, happily, not always with a high category hurricane. This area I live in hasn't been seriously hit since 1964 when Dora came knocking. I think Polk City Airfield is down around the Tampa area isn't it? That would be.somewhere near Bazf. I would think I am over 250 miles N.E. of it.:( I have included the latest storm track. It looks now to be going slightly to the west of us which is not good because the strongest winds and most tornados are on the S.E. side of the hurricane. This track can always change up to 200-300 miles over the next 4 days though, hopefully it will give us a miss. |
Re: More Hurricane fun
Hi JW, your right polk airfield is near to us and got a hammering in the storm, looks like your in for the big one, my mother inlaw lives in Vero Beach and is loading up to leave. After seeing the devistation of Charley I would not recommend to anyone to stay put through it. I hope you stay safe and it does what Charley did to Tampa miss by 100 miles.
|
Re: More Hurricane fun
Hope you guys and your families stay safe over there. Good luck and stay safe.
Take care. |
Re: More Hurricane fun
Thanks Sara its not due in our area (gulf of Mexico) until about 2am on sunday morning and then the winds should only be about 70mph but we should get lots of rain they estimate about 12ins ( if a man did the estimates then it should be about 6ins :D ) (Hurricane humor.) I will try and get more photos if I can.
|
Re: More Hurricane fun
Can quite understand what you mean about 12inch could turn out to be 6inch. Anyway once again take care.
|
Re: More Hurricane fun
Good on you Baz, Love the humor. Again stay safe.............
Sure one of us could show you sara........... |
Re: More Hurricane fun
Yeh take care people out there........
|
Re: More Hurricane fun
Well, we came through pretty well unscathed although we have had no power at the house since Sunday afternoon. We had a house full of friends from the more southern parts of the state. They rolled up on Friday evening and went back home on Monday morning. From what we have heard, their dwellings were OK with the only damage being non-structural. Anyone heard from Bazf?
|
Re: More Hurricane fun
Nothing yet John, Glad your back with us mate.
|
Re: More Hurricane fun
Glad you're safe John W. Haven't heard from Bazf yet though..
|
Re: More Hurricane fun
Good to have you back with us John.
|
Re: More Hurricane fun
Bazf was posting on the footy part yesterday afternoon.
|
Re: More Hurricane fun
Good to hear that you are safely through it, and Bazf must be too if he was posting.
|
Re: More Hurricane fun
Good stuff, thanks guys.
|
Re: More Hurricane fun
What about Sparko in China? There's heavy flooding & a hundred dead there. I hope he's taken his wellys and umbrella with him.
|
Re: More Hurricane fun
Glad to hear you made it safe, John, I thought about you over the weekend - two in a couple of weeks does seem a bit too much.
|
Re: More Hurricane fun
Sparky's fine, it's really hot there but he has managed to find some decentish booze, he has recently discovered a KFC and has set up camp there. He's got a bit fed up with meat looking like road kill but thanks to good old Colonel Sanders his appetite is back on track.:D
He is probably bevvied as I post this...:) |

It's 1:30 in the morning here. There's not much else to do, apart from drink. :D We saw the satellite picture on Channel 9, the English speaking channel. At the time, the tropical typhoon was kicking ass over Taiwan before kissing the coast of mainland China, then moving on up towards Japan. The temperature dropped from 36 degrees to 21 degrees on Sunday, as we caught the periphery of the storm. It was most welcome in Danyang. |
Re: More Hurricane fun
Good luck you all made it through the bad weather. Come back to England. Its not so bad here lol.
|
Re: More Hurricane fun
Are you expecting a call from Hurricaine Ivan, because he looks like a biggie??? :(
|
Re: More Hurricane fun
Keep safe. You are getting it real bad for too long.
|
Re: More Hurricane fun
Hi,
Here is the latest from Hurricane Ivan. It could well be intending to drop in also, it seems to be following a similar track to the one Charley decided to take. I think it's someone else's turn actually, not that I would wish bad luck on anyone. So, in a nutshell, p*ss off Ivan. :nono8: :tongueout :thefinger Still no power, still no telephone service. Life in Florida without AC is no fun at all, then you get to have cold showers in the morning. Oh, deep joy! |
Re: More Hurricane fun
The cold showers should compensate for the lack of air conditioning. Seriously, it must be grim and I hope this next one misses you and you can all start to pick up the pieces and get back to normal.
|
Re: More Hurricane fun
Glad to read that you both have come through safely. Hope Ivan forgets to call. Take care you guys out there.
|
Re: More Hurricane fun
wish i could send you some hot water & power j.w but ill send my best wishes & hopes that ivan misses you, glad your both ok ///
|
Re: More Hurricane fun
Glad your both OK.......best a luck for IVAN if it's on its way....hope not though.
|
Re: More Hurricane fun
Holy crap, here is the latest on Ivan. I don't know how much more of this Florida can stand. There are still nearly a million people without power from Frances.
|
Re: More Hurricane fun
John W - is somebody trying to tell you something here?
|
Re: More Hurricane fun
I'll be OK Pendy, the Devil looks after his own!
|
Re: More Hurricane fun
I've just seen a report on TV of the damage already done by this hurricane. It looks horrendous.
|
Re: More Hurricane fun
well jw & basf i hope you both weather the storm so to speak, youve both had enough this past month, hope all goes well for all of you over there //
|
Re: More Hurricane fun
Thanks for all your thoughts folks and the reason I've been off line nothing to do with hurricanes....... my hard drive died :s_cry: and went to the place where all old hard drives go, being cheap I ordered one on line and when it arrived the package was soaking wet so I had to go and buy one from Walmart(ASDA) and that seems to work :type: . Moral of the story cheap gits never prosper but they should.:end:
|
Re: More Hurricane fun
Hi Bazf,
Glad to see that you are OK. Are you bracing yourself for Ivan? This looks as if it could be the worst this year so far. My God we are having more than our fair share of crap at the moment. Keep your head under the covers. |
Re: More Hurricane fun
Here is todays chart re Ivan for those who find it interesting. Bazf and I look to be specifically targeted on this occassion. Mind you, these charts change slightly every day and only become accurate as the hurricane draws near. Lets hope they've got this totally wrong and the damn thing goes and visits King Neptune out in the Atlantic.
|
Re: More Hurricane fun
Batten down the hatches JohnW and Bazf. Keep safe.
|
Re: More Hurricane fun
We're about to enter the peak of the hurricane season. Any day now, you're going to turn on the TV and see a weather person pointing to some radar blob out in the Atlantic Ocean and or the Gulf and making two basic meteorological points.
(1) There is no need to panic. (2) We could all be killed. Yes, hurricane season is an exciting time to be in Florida. If you're new to the area, you're probably wondering what you need to do to prepare for the possibility that we'll get hit by "the big one." Based on our insurance industry experiences, we recommend that you follow this simple three-step hurricane preparedness plan: STEP 1: Buy enough food and bottled water to last your family for at least three days. STEP 2: Put these supplies into your car. STEP 3: Drive to Nebraska and remain there until Halloween. Unfortunately, statistics show that most people will not follow this sensible plan. Most people will foolishly stay here in Florida. We'll start with one of the most important hurricane preparedness items: HOMEOWNERS' INSURANCE: If you own a home, you must have hurricane insurance. Fortunately, this insurance is cheap and easy to get, as long as your home meets two basic requirements: (1) It is reasonably well-built, and (2) It is located in Wisconsin Unfortunately, if your home is located in Florida, or any other area that might actually be hit by a hurricane, most insurance companies would prefer not to sell you hurricane insurance, because then they might be required to pay YOU money, and that is certainly not why they got into the insurance business in the first place. So you'll have to scrounge around for an insurance company, which will charge you an annual premium roughly equal to the replacement value of your house. At any moment, this company can drop you like used dental floss. SHUTTERS: Your house should have hurricane shutters on all the windows, all the doors, There are several types of shutters, with advantages and disadvantages: Plywood shutters: The advantage is! that, because you make them yourself, they're cheap. Sheet-metal shutters: The advantage is that these work well, once you get them all up. The disadvantage is that once you get them all up, your hands will be useless bleeding stumps, and it will be December. Roll-down shutters: The advantages are that they're very easy to use, and will definitely protect your house. The disadvantage is that you will have to sell your house to pay for them. Hurricane-proof windows: These are the newest wrinkle in hurricane protection: They look like ordinary windows, but they can withstand hurricane winds! You can be sure of this, because the salesman says so. He lives in Nebraska. Hurricane Proofing your property: As the hurricane approaches, check your yard for movable objects like barbecue grills, planters, patio furniture, visiting relatives, etc... You should, as a precaution, throw these items into your swimming pool (if you don! 't have a swimming pool, you should have one built immediately). Otherwise, the hurricane winds will turn these objects into deadly missiles. EVACUATION ROUTE: If you live in a low-lying area, you should have an evacuation route planned out. (To determine whether you live in a low-lying area, look at your driver's license; if it says "Florida," you live in a low-lying area). The purpose of having an evacuation route is to avoid being trapped in your home when a major! r storm hits. Instead, you will be trapped in a gigantic traffic jam several miles from your home, along with two hundred thousand other evacuees. So, as a bonus, you will not be lonely. HURRICANE SUPPLIES: If you don't evacuate, you will need a mess of supplies. Do not buy them now! Florida tradition requires that you wait until the last possible minute, then go to the supermarket and get into vicious fights with strangers over who gets the last can of SPAM. In addition to food and water, you will need the following supplies:> 23 flashlights. At least $167 worth of batteries that turn out, when the power goes off, to be the wrong size for the flashlights. Bleach. (No, I don't know what the bleach is for. NOBODY knows what the bleach is for, but it's traditional, so GET some!) A big knife that you can strap to your leg. (This will be useless in a hurricane, but it looks cool.) A large quantity of raw chicken, to placate the alligators. (Ask anybody who went through Andrew; after the hurricane, there WILL be irate alligators.) $35,000 in cash or diamonds so that, after the hurricane passes, you can buy a generator from a man! with no discernible teeth. Of course these are just basic precautions. As the hurricane draws near, it is vitally important that you keep abreast of the situation by turning on your television and watching TV reporters in rain slickers stand right next to the ocean and tell you over and over how vitally important it is for everybody to stay away from the ocean. Good luck, and remember: Its great living in Paradise |
Re: More Hurricane fun
It's good to see you can have a sense of humour about it. I can't imagine what it must be like living through such storms. I had enough with my experience in a caravan with attached wind generator this summer. During the night it felt like we were going to take off.
|
Re: More Hurricane fun
Bazf - with a sense of humour like yours, you have to be hurricane proof!
Seriously, both you and John W, try to stay safe - sounds stupid, but what else can one say? We will be waiting for news from both of you. Be sensible, lads, come home to Accy. |
Re: More Hurricane fun
I've just been looking at the NASA satelite pictures....IVAN IS A MONSTER!!!!
|
Re: More Hurricane fun
Well done Bazf and John W on maintaining a sense of humour. Stay safe and let us know that you are ok..:)

Re: More Hurricane fun
Here is the latest tracking for Ivan. It would appear that Bazf will not be too badly affected and St. Augustine is unlikely to be affected except for a strongish breeze. We have to be concerned for the people of the panhandle though, it would appear they are going to take the brunt of the storm.
|
Re: More Hurricane fun
Hey Bazf,
Love your two humourous posts. Good stuff! |
Re: More Hurricane fun
Heard reports of Cayman Islands sounds real bad with waves 20ft. Does this thing not blow out?
|
Re: More Hurricane fun
They don't usually start to blow out Ifty until they go over land or cooler waters. They feed on the warm waters of the tropics and the gulf of Mexico. It can take hundreds of miles for them to disipate totally. Frances was still droping loads of rain when it reached New England last week.
|
Re: More Hurricane fun
I think it's going to swing further West to hit the Texas/louisiana coastline; any other predictions?
|
Re: More Hurricane fun
It could well do that T. I certainly hope that New Orleans do not get a direct hit. I think that would be the biggest disaster because the whole city is below sea level. It would appear, at the moment, that it will make landfall round about the Florida/Alabama border. As there is nothing but warm water in between them and Ivan, it is potentially a great disaster with billions of dollarsworth of damage and more than likely, some loss of life. Very frightening for the people in its path.

Mind you, it could be Mexico looking at this:
