Me too, what a great story eh.

They thought they were all killed.

It's good to have a story that had a happy ending,:)

Chile Miners Rescue

It has to be one of the most moving pieces of news coverage I've seen in a long time, as the first of the miners was pulled out and hugged his family. I'm not ashamed to say I shed a tear or two.

10 out now ! ... it is great following this.

There has been discussions that they may need therapy for months to come for a type of post-traumatic stress, etc. Can understand this, sure they will get the very best of support though.

How long before we see the movie, with the Yanks doing the rescuing and some evil Brit being the mine owner who tries to cover up the health and safety stuff?

Aye. I doubt if this fella from Church and his invention will get a mention. No doubt it's part of the rescue capsule and it's never failed:

interesting , never knew that , have seen them (or very similar) in use fixed to the top of the cage or bucket when I worked underground .

Deepest I ever worked was 4480' four thousand four hundred and forty feet , cockroaches big as rats ;) :D

Good to see them coming up to the surface. Wouldn't like to be the last man rescued. Imagine you would have to be very strong mentally to volunteer to be last.

It must feel like they are being born again . Come on you can get them out !!!

Re: Chile Miners Rescue

I am going to duck and hide when i have said this.......yes it was moving to watch the rescue....but did all the channels have to give so much time to the subject? Has there been no other news in the time that the rescue was going on?

The longer it went on and the more tedious I found it.

Don't get me wrong, I am really glad that they all survied and were restored to their families, but I didn't want to watch the whole shebang....am I on my own here?

Now, I'll go and find a big stone to hide under.:)

gynn 14-10-2010 12:45

Re: Chilean miners

I'll come and hide with you, Margaret, because I agree with you. Yes it was a fantastic and moving achievement, but once it was up and running, the news channels could have left them to it, and given regular updates.

It is one of the problems with rolling 24 hour news stations that sometimes they go over the top in the coverage they give individual stories.

That said, I'm as delighted as everyone else that the 33 miners are all safe.

DaveinGermany 14-10-2010 13:20

Re: Chilean miners

I too thought that the coverage was over excessive, great they are all out, but was it really necessary to have 22 hours live coverage of an event that has no real bearing on our own lives ? Or was this a collective escapism from our own pressing concerns & problems (in the UK & Europe), a feel good uplift for the populace ?

Who took note of more Labour MP's being pulled up for expenses ? The death of 6 NATO troops in Afghanistan ? Foreign GP's who can't speak English ? More people to face tax demands from HMRC due to HMRC screwing up ...again !

But of course the Chileans are fine & they'll be doing alright out of it, films, interviews, documentaries, well 32 of them at least ! I think there's one who probably wished he'd stayed down the mine.

Just a tad O.T.T. but that, as they say, is only my opinion.

Re: Chilean miners

I was at front of TV more than ever before, stayed up till 3 am ( still knackered ) this was history being made , I wanted to see it live . The Chileans have lead the way and are proud. A very emotional event that could have been o so very different.

Re: Chilean miners

I am not sure why the news programs have to approach situations like this with such fervour.....it smacks of 'overkill'. The Raoul Moat situation was just the same.
Do we really need to see every second of what is going on?
And how much bad news was 'buried' by this event?

Anyway I am glad I was not on my own in getting decidely tired of the business.

Re: Chilean miners

More experienced came out first, so if there was a problem with the capsule they would have a better chance .Then it was the " not so healthy" eg diabetics , blood pressure etc .

The worst example of overkill on Sky News in recent months was the Naomi Campbell/dirty diamonds court case. A complete non story, yet Sky carried the whole court proceedings live for hours on end.

Anyway, to keep on thread, I thought the Chilean President did a good job staying through the whole rescue. He showed true leadership of the country.

You don't need to Margaret, how many times do we have to see the lift coming to the surface and the President hugging the next to be rescued, its just been over kill:(

Re: Chilean miners

Once was enough for me! Now I guess we'll have endure hourly reports on their health and how they are going to get back to normal living......it is going to take some doing whilst in the glare of the media.

For goodness sake the cameras shoud all pack up and go home.....we(I) have seen enough. Besides it will spoil the film version.
