North South divide

Spending cuts: it's grimmer up north | Society | guardian.co.uk

As somebody currently looking for a graduate job in the north for 2011 I can totally relate to this - graduate fair in the CS department of University of Manchester and 80% of the recruiters were London based.

Watford?

That's almost in the Highlands.

The border control's at Swiss Cottage.

:D

Unless there's an eathquake, and the country's reconfigured, it's unlikely to change.

Good luck with your job search.

After graduating I had to move to London. It can be fine, just make sure you get all your innoculations, and plenty of trips back up here, to keep your sanity intact.

The divide has always been the same but it does depend on which career path you follow as to how bad it is.

As for the article itself you do wonder how exact it is when they don't even know which are cities and which are towns

You'll want to move back, now Burnley's been awarded city status.

I would just like to point out that the streets of London aren't paved with gold, and that the massive population expansion, forecast for London and the southeast, mainly due to foreign migration, means that the rich poor divide will continue to exist down there.

'Yet alongside prosperity lives poverty. 4 in 10 (or 650,000) London children live in poverty , 12% above the national average4. Child poverty levels in inner London boroughs are higher still; more than one in every two inner London children live in poverty6. Indeed, London has the highest proportion of children living in income poverty (after housing costs) of any region or country in Great Britain5.'

The current government have recognized that a North/South divide does exist,so from now on the whole of Britain will be known as the South.

I'd say the biggest divide is that whatever work you do there is more opportunity to make money in London.. and in some professions such as nursing etc you may get London weighting, but then again the minimum hourly rate is the same in London as anywhere else.
