Re: For Less

There was a model railway exhibition at the Hyndburn Sports Centre a few weeks ago which was very impressive, even if the admission fees were a little expensive.

However, I was pointed back in the direction of the East Lancashire Railway and if money allows I will be treating The Bride to Christmas lunch aboard a steam train at some point in December, something I wouldn't have found out about otherwise.

I must say that some of the stalls were selling very cheap 00 gauge engines and coaches compared to what the normal going rate would be. I've long since lapsed with my model railway but it was all interesting stuff.

Get back into it and live the boyhood life again. Will take the mind off the woes of the world and give you that extremely rare thing called "me time" again.

I was VERY tempted and I vowed that at some point I will because the kid in me woke up again watching those little trains. If we had the money I could have spent thousands that day.

Unfortunately, Rishton Towers is undergoing renovations at the moment and Christmas is looming but the loft conversion starts next year and I have a mind that it will be put to good use....

You could leave a space in the loft Ken, then you would have somewhere to spend your spare time:rolleyes:

The Fees were on reflection a touch on the expensive side if you only have a passing interest in such things, but what the hey, these exhibitions are run by enthusiasts that have to make ends meet for the hire of such a prodigious Site.

First Time showing in The sports centre, one for Hyndburn nil for King Georges Hall Blackburn where it always used to be held.

Now, if only we can get this classed as an art form the grants would come pouring in and perhaps the entrance fees could be reduced or even abolished?
:)

Sorry John, just spent the afternoon having my sides sewn up.

Explain the phrase 'spare time' to me again?

Seen as time spent sat in Council chambers, as by all accounts you don't get a look in due to one P.B. Esquire (allegedly) hogging & pre deciding issues. ;)

I can table questions, for which I am guaranteed time to speak, but the First Earl of Oswaldtwistle always has the last word.

The main problem is actually getting him to arrange council meetings so that we can discuss the really serious issues in the borough. They're supposed to be every six weeks but we haven't had one since July.

He also schedules most of the tricky ones with votes he's likely to lose at 1pm so that the Labour councillors have a devil of a time getting there.

Democracy in action, vote Conservative if you like your borough run this way.

Getting back on thread, has anyone else visited the splendid East Lancashire Railway?

My wife was bored to tears but I loved every second. You can feel the enthusiasm from the people who run it.

You could have added adventure to her life by suggesting she became a member oh the over 25 MPH club.

She doesn't do that in a car, the excitement of a steam engine doing that might prove too much.

Yes I have and hung mi napper out the window on the corners to smell the smoke and condensing steam of the engine. What a buzz that was.

Eric, my one and only model train set would have been right up your street, you being Canadian.
It was the big gauge('O'?) and it was an American engine with a cow catcher, headlamps and a caboose behind the carriages. Weighed a ton.
The only problem was it was so big that to have a good run he had to build me tracks right through the house and down the back garden so it didn't get played with that often.
Heaven knows where he got it from(not new) in the late 40s, probably a collectors item now.

Sounds like it could be a Lionel ... They are still popular with collectors over here, and some of the early ones are probably worth a lot of money. HO or Double "O" is much more appropriate for smaller areas. N Scale is even better if you have limited space, or if you want to build large complicated layouts that don't take over your house:D You can even get Z scale if you want a layout in your desk drawer at work. For those living in a shoe box, there are even smaller scales ... but they are not all that practical or popular.
