That's very kind of you your Holiness

Pope reverses thousands of years of Church teachings as he declares: In some cases, condoms are OK | Mail Online

That's very kind of you your Holiness. As a practising Roman Catholic myself, I actually think the Church should take a more pragmatic view where contraception is concerned. I often wonder how many practising Catholics still keep rigidly to the churches teaching on birth control. In this day and age people should be able to chose how many children to bring into the world not take things to chance at the behest of the Church. It seems the Pope has said that people such as prostitutes should be allowed to use condoms in order to prevent the spread of AIDs, can't really see the difference in preventing unwanted children myself. Is this not just another example of the reasons why churches, not only the Catholic church, are on the decline, a move to 21st century thinking may just stem the flow away from the church door

I don't understand why anybody can allow another person dictate how they conduct their lives. Conscience is better than dogma anyday (if you have no conscience you are less than human)

the only reason why the pope is giving the ok to condoms is so that his priests will have less chance of leaving DNA behind and he wont have to appologise again

I notice how the Popes Company VAT-A-Can, (Main distributors of Guinness),
is always quick off the mark for promotional gimmicks, e.g. Saints, Miracles and bleeding Palms, (I hate that Sunday).

Will they now start producing their own rubber liners?

From what I remember the usual ones have a 'use before date', will the new ones have a:-

Feel Guilty Before Date

Stamped on them?

You forgot the little prayer sheet that will go in them asking for forgiveness. Does this also mean that the missionaries of the church will be handing them out as freebies?

a practising Roman Catholic at the behest of the Church. a move to 21st century

I read your quote on Pope Benedict's thoughts on condoms yesterday , Jaysay .

I have taken some phrases from the quote and would be pleased if you would clarify and expand on what you mean by :-

1. A practising Roman Catholic .
2. The Church .
3. A move to the 21st century .

I thought that was what the phrase "in the world, but not of the world" was meant to explain.

I was always under the impression that the Mass was unchanging; same Victim, same Sacrifice, offered eternally. Or have I gotten hold of the wrong end of the stick here?

Correct on both points .

A Christian doesn't expect the truth on faith and morals he/she believes in to be changed by the world . Quite the reverse , he/she hopes the world will be changed by the truth of Christianity .
Where Christianity has compromised with the world the results have not been good . For example the " conversion " of the Emperor Constantine led to a fall in Christian values . The adoption of a political role by some popes led them into a princely , monarchical role , neglecting their pastoral duties and bringing about a deterioration of Christian standards .

True , the substance of the Mass given to us by Jesus is unchanging , but the way that substance is celebrated has developed over the centuries . In recent years there has been considerable change in how the Mass is celebrated .
1. The reform of the scripture readings , so that we have four Bible passages each Sunday over a three-year cycle , which covers the major parts of the Bible .
2. The reception of Communion under both forms of bread and wine for those who wish .
3. An increasing role for lay people in the Mass .
4. The restructuring of the altar so that the priest is not facing away from the rest of the people .
5. The use of English instead of Latin and Greek .
6. The adoption of many hymns once looked upon as Protestant , and a vast growth of new hymns .
7. The simplification of the Mass by scrapping repetition and some parts which had crept in over the centuries and were not really suitable .
8. The increase in the number of the Eucharistic Prayers ( the central prayer of the Mass ) , instead of being stuck with the one Roman Canon .
9. Masses written for the specific use of children .
10. Christians of churches which are not Catholic playing an active role in the Mass when it is suitable .

I could go on . So much has happened since the Second Vatican Council to bring reform in all areas of the Church's life . Sadly so many are unaware of it , or have been badly introduced to it .
