Outdoor swimming around Accrington.

At this time of year, when it's freezing cold and all the ponds, lakes etc are frozen over. I am wondering if anyone remembers swimming in outdoor water areas in the Summer. I remember we used to swim in the quarry on the side of the Coppice above Huncoat. Many people did and we used to have these big pieces of polystyrene which used to lie on and swim with.

Anyone else recall this or swimming at other places round the area?

;) Kestrel X.

The Kemp Delph - a water filled disused quarry at Knuzden was notorious for swimming deaths. It was extremely deep and the cold water caused cramps and tragedies.

If it's the same one , Margaret , I can remember going there once when I was about 8 .
My grandma's sister lived in one of those little cottages in Stanhill village , set back from the road , just before you get to what was the pickle factory .

It was a lovely sunny day , and she took us across the road , down a path where we came to this lodge . I can remember people diving from a high rocky ledge into the water .
It was great fun to watch .

I remember Edisford Bridge:alright: I also remember a swim in the cut ... fell off the Whalley Rd. bridge one late nite ... almost sobered me up ... I think I'd been drinking in the Load:confused: ... not recommended:eek:;)

We are fortunate here in having lots of places to swim ... Lake Ontario, of course ... but lots of smaller lakes in the area. Swimming is safe(ish), as long as one doesn't run into a large muskie ("Maashkinoozhe" for those of you who speak Ojibwa;)) Ultimate place around here (and this is for those who may chance to visit): Sandbanks Provincial Park Sandbanks .... and the surrounding area is famous for its wine.

We all use to go swimming in the old lodge at the back of Rist Wires.
