Big smoky fire near Whitebirk,

Did anybody see the big cloud of thick black smoke drifting over Accrington about 4pm today?
I had just left Blackburn Hospital and saw it rising from somewhere over Whitebirk Estate, by the time I had got to West End it was very thick and had already got over Church area. Any idea where it was and what was burning?

I've heard it was an old factory,at the bottom of Spring street, Rishton, apparently full of tyres.
Could see the smoke and flames from Great Harwood.
Time is about right so presume it is the same one.

I was invited to the People's Centre Christmas dinner yesterday so spent the entire afternoon being plied with drink by three women in their 70s. Anyone who thinks that pensioners can't stick it away could do with a night on the tiles with this lot. My wife had to come and get me at 7pm and I didn't take much rocking after we'd had our tea.

Someone came into the club and mentioned the burning mill but as usual our splendid fire service was already on with the problem although they really shouldn't have to spend so much time down Spring Street. I keep on at HBC to intervene but I'm not really getting anywhere.
