The Weather
Now I don't want to make this bad weather a political issue.. but where are the government that told us they were prepared for any situation?.. they told us only weeks ago not to worry .. these people and ex high school boys have no idea of the chaos this country is facing.
|
Re: The Weather
Seems you think the 'high school' boys should be out with the brooms and shovels , how about conscripting the dole dossers from under their duvets to do some of the clean up , lets call it work experience :D
You guys need someone like Mama Grizzly (Sarah Palin) , she didn't winge and moan when she was Gov. of Alaska she just sorted the problem. Never heard such cry babies , we had over 6' of snow over the 'hill' (elevation 7200') into Nevada from California last night and the road is still open and the trucks are still rolling, :D :D |
Re: The Weather
just had a look at the Arrod (Gt Harwood) web cam and every thing is clear , whats the problem ...

Re: The Weather
Trouble is SJ that a bit of snow over here causes major disruptions. Heathrow has been virtually closed since last Friday and there are major problems with the rail and road networks:mad:

Re: The Weather
Driving round east Lancs yesterday from 6 am til 8pm. No roads seemed to have been gritted. finally saw gritter at 8 that appeared to be spreading a very thin load - Gritter Lite!

Re: The Weather
And Labour did SUCH a good job of it in January now didn't they.....
Oh for a goldfish memory.... Infrastructure takes time to put in place and personal responsibility is a key factor. I put Winter Tyres on my car a couple of weeks ago and they difference in grip is night and day. even on frozen compacted snow getting up teh 1:4 hill to get off teh estate it just grips and goes. Walking round the car park at work ( which is a nice 1 mile stroll at lunch) the number of very expensive prestige cars driving round with nearly bald summer tyres on was daft. I'm not surprised that people get stuck, my only problem is they have a habit of blocking those of us that can get about. |

Re: The Weather
Its typically British to argue amongst ourselves as to which political party is to blame, rather than concentrating on the real problems. It smacks of arguing how the deck chairs should be arranged on the deck of the Titanic.
Have you noticed how often over the past few years we have suffered "Once in 100 years" or "Once in 50 years" weather? It is time everyone woke up to the fact that extremes of weather are becoming more and more commonplace, whatever the cause. Also, one of the biggest complaints from travellers is the woeful public relations displayed by airports, airlines and rail operators. A full review of information dissemination is needed, and if the big travel operators aren't prepared to put resources into it, they should be forced to do so. |

Absolutely but how would you feel if the ConLib spent 300 million on severe winter defences only for it to be mild and wet.. then they would be castigated for spending money unnecessarily.... read this - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-12042733 dammed if you do... springs to mind. |
Re: The Weather
Any of you lot know what the M66 is like? I should be back in Manchester tomorrow where I intend doing a bit of shopping before going on to Accy, by either the X41 or if that's messed up, by train by either Blackburn or Preston.
|
Re: The Weather
its fine mate, drove it this morning, clear both lanes all the way (including the A56 bit from Rammy to Accy ). Buses were running as well as I passed 1

Strange as it sounds, Global Warming( if its exists in the context people generally discuss as opposed to the natural cycles the Earth goes through over millions of years) will make the UK colder. Its complex but basically the ice caps melt which weakens the salinity of the sea which affects the currents, particularly the North Atlantic drift which is what is responsible for keeping the UK and western Europe warmer than would be expected for the latitude that we sit at. so warmer everywhere else, colder and wetter for us! Winner!!!! |
Re: The Weather
There was an expert on Sky News this morning saying the Scandanavians cope better than us because they get a different type of snow. Softer, fluffier and easier to manage. Ours is soggy and slushy.
So now we know!:confused::confused: |

Re: The Weather
Right. It looks like there is a strong possibilty of more snow tomorrow. What happened last week when it came down? Was the M66 shut and if not, how long were the delays?

Just remember the record of the Met Office; like last year, they said this was going to be one of the warmest winters on record. They got it completely wrong. If you wonder why, look at their website. Instead of concentrating on the basics, these days they concern themselves more with this old garbage about global warming. They need to get their act togeather and fast. |

Re: The Weather
I've just looked at the Met Office infared vision satellite and based upon my calculations and the movement of the weather front from the West you're going to get it any time now.
Check yourself, and follow the progress from this afternoon: Met Office: British Isles: Infrared satellite imagery You may wish to check with the visible image from earlier. |
Re: The Weather
I just checked the old fashioned way, looked out of the window! No snow yet but it might snow later then again it might not.
Just an idea for those of you with Brit Grit, You could fill your pockets up ala The Great Escape, then whilst walking along shake the grit down your trouser legs thus making a safe path to walk on. I know i'm just getting my coat now.:D:D:D:D |
Re: The Weather
The Great Escape? If I remember correctly, 50 got shot on the orders of Hitler for their efforts; how many will Britcliffe put against the wall for a scheme such as this?

He would make a good guard in a POW camp. Do you remember the one in The Great Escape who took bribes in exchange for a 35mm camera? What was his name?

Re: The Weather
Wouldn't it be good if everyone took a bit of responsibilty for the pavement and the road outside their own house?........cleared the footpath and scattered a bit of grit in the road
OK, it wouldn't solve the problems on the motorway or at Heathrow, but it would help our own little part of the world. |

As for the problems at Heathrow, our biggest national airport or on the motorways and train networks, it does make me wonder if certain members would be so blase about the problems thousands upon thousands of commuters are facing if they and their families were in the same predicament:mad: |

BBC Breakfast has been reporting the simple human stories about the weather and how it will affect families getting together for Christmas. There was a young couple with their little baby who cant risk travelling across the country in case they get caught by the weather, and a young boy trapped in Washington who can't get home to his mum for Christmas.

Re: The Weather
Bernie, himself clears our pathway and sprinkles grit, and then he sprinkles grit in the road in front of our home........this has broken up the snow there and makes it easier to get the car out.
We do this in case we have to make a flying visit to Ma. |

Re: The Weather
Apparently, like last year and the summer before it, the Met Office have got it wrong again. Their forecast for this winter was 1 - 1.5 degrees above normal. Instead, we are looking at the wrong end of the coldest December for 100 years. I was surprised to notice, on crossing the Ribble at Salmesbury, that it was well on its way to freezing over completely.
Piers Corbyn, interesting chap, his brother is an MP, has made quite a name for himself by looking at the way the sun influences our weather and as a result, since 2000, has achieved a forecasting accuracy of something like 85 - 90%. Which, compared to the Met Office's lamentable record, is pretty impressive. Anyway, he reckons that although bad winters do tend to come in threes, this is the start of a longer trend and we are heading into a Mini Ice Age, apparently we are overdue one. Chuck another shovelful on the fire, Alice! |
