How weird.

Late last night I sent an email about her.

I was on a film website and they wrongly said she'd played George, in the groundbreaking The Killing of Sister George.

She was actually Alice/Childie, the prize in the love triangle, fought over by Beryl Reid and Coral Browne.

It's one of my favourite films, and it annoyed me that they'd got Susannah York's role listed incorrectly, hence the email.

She played some interesting and challenging parts, especially early in her career, and helped shaped how certain subjects were viewed.

(Departs, humming the theme to The Twighlight Zone.)

George was the name of the nurse played by Beryl Reid in the fictional TV soap opera, that was about to be axed from the series, hence the title of the film.

Susannah York was a fine actress. RIP

I echo the sentiments of this fine actress.......I remember her best in the film Tom Jones it was a favourite of mine.....himself liked it too because it was ever so slightly bawdy and he knew it embarrassed me......(sensitive soul that I am)
Rest In Peace Sussanah.

Yes, that's why I emailed them.

Susannah York's character was Alice, aka Childie.

Incidentally a Dutch Countess I worked for in my summer vacations whilst a student, is seen in the nightclub, when George and Childie are in fancy dress as Laurel and Hardy. It was actually filmed in real life Sapphic den the Gateways club in the Kings Road, Chelsea.

A beautiful actress, happy to throw off the dolly-bird tag, and accept roles which challenged.

R.I.P.

I should have said that himself took me to see this film at the Odeon in Accrington......I was just sweet 16 at the time...never been kissed, kicked or runover :)

Oh, that is sad to hear. She had bone cancer, didn't she?

I saw The Killing of Sister George at the Belasco Theater in New York, December, 1966. Beryl Reid played George - for which she won a Best Actress Tony the following year. Eileen Atkins took on the role of Alice in that production and was nominated for a Tony. I believe the play received the Tony for best play.

When I visited the UK in 1998 Susannah York lived basically next door to my sister in Heelands, Milton Keynes. I often wondered how she would be elligible for a Council Home, then perhaps actors.acctresses were not paid as much as imagined. . Vale Susannah

Are you sure?

The last time I saw her on the box, last year, she was appearing on Celebrity Cash in the Attic.

It was filmed in her home in leafy south-west London, and she said she'd brought her children up there.

No, it was definitely her house. I used to live near her.
