the thing is with the bbc being forced to lose 200 odd of its it staff and get rid of 60% of their websites is just a coicendence:rolleyes: accyweb will thrive because its free.murdoch want to charge you for everything on the internet.

That's an odd statement. He is a business man who runs businesses. If it costs him money to produce then of course he will want to charge for it or he wont be in business for long.

There was a review of BBC services two years ago and I said this at the time in a letter. The problem is, as has been pointed out, that the BBC has lost focus of what it actually is.

First and foremost, it is the premier broadcaster in the UK and one of the major players worldwide so what is it doing even considering a social networking aspect of its web content? Much of the old Red Button services were of little interest to anyone and have now been trimmed back but there are also scores of other non-programme activities which have nothing to do with broadcasting. Get rid, start concentrating on making the vast archives available and trimming the box-ticking half efforts across the board.

Lord Reith will be spinning in his grave.

Last time I heard the paper copies of the titles were funding the websites. The websites reduce the sale of paper copy so less money comes into the pot to pay for the websites.

The overheads of facebook are completely different so it is not a sensible comparison.

The Murdoch empire already has too strong a foothold in UK media, along the lines of 39% of BSkyB plus assorted papers. A query is currently being looked at by the Competition Commission regarding whether it is acceptable to allow him to get a tighter grip.

It really doesn't do to have one company controlling too much news, it is already an extremely powerful tool and we have quite enough tabloid television too.

I think a retired Scottish footballer called Andy Gray, bought some natty check trousers, similar to Rupert Bear's.

There must have been a fault with the zip, resulting in an exposure of Gray's anatomy.

This made newspaper headlines.

A Mr. Murdoch was quoted in the press, questioning the power of modern zips.

Simple.

Fade to grey.

Cheers Rindy, I was aware of that incident, but it's going back a while. Okay it has been brought back into the public eye at this time by the story in the paper at the start of this year. Furthermore Andy Gray has made himself headline news again in the last couple of days with his views on female officials.

Seeing as this tale has been highlighted by C'mon & knowing his leanings & tendencies, I can't help but feel that this is more about Murdoch cosying up with Cameron, as to any real empathy with a fellow Jockeen. ;)

Of course these are just my musings on the matter & I may well be way of the mark, still we're all individuals & have our own particular take on subjects don't we ?

Yes, there was the question about Gray's anatomy being off-side, when the zip bust, and some wimmin not knowing if it was or not.

Apparently the zip wasn't made in China, thus the blame should really be laid at the door of right-wing capitalists.

True. Would Silvio Beriusconi have survived so long if he didn't own the majority of the Italian media? (Well, maybe in Italy he would??).
If this empire grows like it's planned to we will have a KINGMAKER. In fact, perhaps with the empire as it is now we already have one.

The problem with murdoch is that he thinks he has the right to determine the agenda in any market he sets his sights on. When I watch the output of his tv news networks from the US, I hope that such material could never be broadcast in this country. But I would be wrong in that hope. He really is no better than Hearst, Rothermere, Maxwell or Black. Nobody should have as much power in the marketplace of public opinion as this man wants and has in other countries.

Well I've heard this so called tape between Keys and Gray, Gray said very little really, he just agreed with what Keys said, but according to reports this morning Gray wasn't sacked for these comments but because of another tape which appeared on YouTube yesterday, regarding sexist comments he made to a female Sky colleague. Mind you to my way of thinking its a storm in a teacup really, has anybody actually ever watched Loose Women on ITV every lunchtime, if we're going to be pedantic with sexists comments take a butchers at those little loves ripping blokes to pieces for an hour 5 times a week:D

Well the fact is Andy Gray isn't an isolated case, take any bunch of lads going to a match on Saturday and finding out that a woman was running the line, the crack would be fierce, you know the old, should be at home making tea or doing the washing and ironing, using the hoover and admit CS I bet you'd do it too. The mistake Gray and Keys made was leaving their mikes on for the world to hear. I think Richard Keys had no option really but to resign as they were a double act like Ant and Deck. Also remember that these two are not the first to go for making comments on air in the same way, Rodney Marsh was sacked by Sky of making inappropriate comments and Ron Atkinson sacked by ITV for making racial comments about Marcel Desai in a Chelski Euro cup match. I think the answer is when your commentating make sure your mikes of if your having a private conversation or suffer the consequences;)

You mean the New Labour Party.......which if you care to look at in detail, were a pale version of the Tory Party.

To support the policies that you might think the Labour Party(AKA New Labour) would uphold, then you would have to find a candidate from the Socialist party.

These days there is very little difference between any of the 3 major parties...they just hope that you will have been so brainwashed by your parents, the media or other influences,(or be so dim) that you won't notice how they have become like one another.
None of them have any real liking for the electorate once they have got into the Palace of Westminster....none of them will listen to the concerns of the public...they pretend to listen, and issue sound bites and platitudes, none of which mean a thing.

Perhaps it's because the movers and shakers in all three mainstream political parties are public school toffs.

Who chose politics as a career, after attending their elitist universities, and haven't the foggiest idea what a hard day's graft is really like.

Therefore all the lot of them are so far removed from the reality of the majority of peoples' lives that they might as well be on the Moon, rather than the rarefied atmosphere of the Palace of Westminster.

Still, if people are happy not to see this, we should perhaps afford them a little pity.

There is nothing at all wrong with my memory. I remember all those times...and much harder times before that......when there was not much in the way of welfare...or Public Assistance as it was called then.

I grew up just after the war and in those days if you didn't work(for whatever reason) then you didn't eat. My mother had three jobs(my father suffered blast injuries on D-day+6 and was unable to work) brought seven of us up in dire poverty, I do not recall us getting anything off the state........so please don't lecture me on poverty and what the Labour party did for the poor.

Therefore all the lot of them are so far removed from the reality of the majority of peoples' lives that they might as well be on the Moon, rather than the rarefied atmosphere of the Palace of Westminster.

Still, if people are happy not to see this, we should perhaps afford them a little pity.

Bless.

How very true.
How many sitting MP's do you know of (in any party) who have worked hard in a job in manufacturing, and that required manual labour?
I would hazard a guess to say that there are not many(if any at all).

That is the crux of the problem......they know nothing of the struggles of the majority of people in this country.

Purely coincidental, as I was noseying around earlier today to see what the Fylde's Miss Jolly Hockey-Sticks was up to now, when I came across the Lacashire Telegraph's General Election result report.

In the comments section a workmate from the printers where Graham Jones worked, said he went into work there, the week prior to the election.

So, few and far between as they might be, it looks like we're lucky enough to have a M.P. who understands the meaning of a hard day's graft.

Dream result for Hyndburn Labour candidate (From Lancashire Telegraph)

Cameron also supported Murdoch, until the Milly Dowler news came out, even then he was the LAST of the big 3 to oppose him,so i can only assume that knowing earlier celebrities phones had been hacked, that was ok, even though its the "Same" offence, so i fer one very much doubt his sincerity in all this.

That's as maybe, but David Cameron did not become a MP until 2001 when he was elected MP in Witney.
He did stand in 1997 in Stafford, but lost.
The minimum wage act was one of the first things the new Labour Government did, the act was passes in 1998.
So David Cameron could not have said anything in parliament about it at that time. The only confirmation of your quote, is through the Labour Party website.
You should check your sources.

That said the Minimum Wage has benefited many people.
So for once, I kind of agree with you

I think you make a very good point Margaret.

I handed my notice in at Daltons Printers the week after the general election and have been back on a few occasions. My desk, room, commuter, chair and all the other machiniery I operated are all still there.

I think there are a minority of MP's who have emerged from a low wage working environment.

We've been very lucky in Hyndburn the last three MPs were born and bred in the Constituency and for the most part worked there too, which to my way of think is how it should be, not placed people from a central office list, which applies to all parties

Well she certainly didn't get my vote on principle, the first time since I became eligible to vote in 1967 that I didn't vote Tory, she never stood a chance anyway, Labour found that out when they made the mistake of picking Kever Coombs as their candidate in 1987 and he failed miserably

Arthur Davidson was a non-local, being a Scouser, and was our M.P. for seventeen years.

Ya but once JKH beat him in 1983 that broke the mould, I would think if more constituencies in the country had an home grown MP it would be very difficult for an outsider to come in a retake the seat, especially in seats like Hyndburn, I may not agree with Graham Jones or what he stands for nor did I do Greg Pope, but I think I'd rather have people, irrespective of party, fighting my corner in Westminster who actually know and live in the area they represent, rather than somebody thrust on the people by the political grandees of any party

Teddy, Eggwina, Maggie, and Winnie, all seemed quite popular in their various constitencies.

All of who had no connection with any of those places.

Perhaps we should bring rules in, stating a M.P. has to be born in their costituency.

So we won't see the likes of Heath, Curry, Thatcher, and Churchill again.

:D

I think it was because Denis didn't 'pester her', once the delightful twins were born.

That, and drinking the blood of lactose free children.

beingPrivate Eye subscriber for over 10 years, it does alter your take on the world, but why cmon after all you must have read over the years you still have a affinity for the political opposistion in this country..

As much as I dislike Murdoch and his methods I think it needs to be mentioned that you have a still have a free choice as to wether you buy his product or not , consider the fact that you can brought to court and fined/jailed by the other major media player in the British market even if you don't use the product

Not quite, Steeljack. if your house is a public one and you happen to have a license to sell intoxicating liqour and you then decide to relay a Sky TV footy match down into the public bar without a seperate payment to the aforementioned, then you are suject to a fine of £5000pds and/or a term of imprisonment. Alternatively - and despite this country being a member of the so called EU - if you decide to tune in to one of the European Sky-linked channels to receive the game, you are also subject to the same penalty.

OK , see your point about "stealing" cable and thats fair enough , but the point I was trying to make is that every TV owning household in the UK is forced under threat of court action to puchase a TV Licence to support the BBC . to my mind thats as much of a monoply as what they 'accuse' Murdoch of having

True. But most people in the UK are more than happy to pay roughly about £2.50 a week to watch some decent TV without an advert for KFC, Coca-Cola or some other dog food breaking in every six or seven minutes. It's a case of quality over quantity, although that does not mean we don't appreciate good US stuff such as CIS which we now get on digital terrestrial.

That £2.50 compares pretty well with roughly the £7.50 a week you additionally need to pay to tune in to Murdoch's channels; apart from just one or two good 'uns - such as the National Geographic - there is nowt of any value there. Unless, of course, you're interesting in watching a bunch of foreign sodomites kicking a ball around every weekend in which case good luck to you.

Your spot on about that SJ, it wouldn't bother me if I didn't watch another BBC program again, I have Sky which is my choice, if I have a TV and don't watch BBC at all, I still have to buy a TV licence by law
