Never to old!!

What a brave lady. Well done.:D

What gets me though is why did no-one else jump in to stop these men?

It takes a lady in her 70's to lead the way and then everyone else that was there then helps out??!!

Woman pensioner foils sledgehammer jewellery store raid by clobbering six thugs with handbag | Mail Online

I think the shop should send her something expensive to say thanks for her bravery.;)

If you saw this happening would you step in?

cashman 08-02-2011 07:32

Re: Never to old!!

To me its bravery n stupidity, this aint someone being attacked, its someone robbing a store which will be insured no doubt, if was my mum i'd play hell wi her.

heth 08-02-2011 07:37

Re: Never to old!!

I think the older generation Cashy just get on with it though dont they?

I agree if it was my Mum I would do the same but they seem to be fearless when they see something like this :D

cashman 08-02-2011 07:40

Re: Never to old!!

its a different mentality i think to today.:)

garinda 08-02-2011 07:41

Re: Never to old!!

I admire her pluck.

However, if it had been my mum I'd have gone mad at her, even though I'd been secretly proud of her actions.

Jewellery is insured, and can be replaced. Lives can't.

I once chased a man all through Knightsbridge, who'd stole a pair of cashmere socks. I did get them back, despite him brandishing a knife, when I'd caught up with him.

Once the initial adrenaline had left, I felt pretty stupid, and vowed not to put myself in danger again, if faced with the same situation.

It hasn't happened since, but I suspect I'd do the same thing again.

I hope this woman gets some sort of an award.

cashman 08-02-2011 07:47

Re: Never to old!!

oh i probably would? have never been in that position, but a couple of times i have assisted people being attacked by a gang n so i reckon i would probably be stupid enough to do the same.

Re: Never to old!!

The part of that report which I found thought provoking was the bit where one of the robbers was ready to attack her, but backed off when he saw her fearless expression.
She had the element of surprise on her side.

cashman 08-02-2011 07:51

Re: Never to old!!

whats provoking about that is fact she could have had a sledgehammer in the kisser.

yep but every robber would NOT hold back would they, thats been proven many times in the past.

heth 08-02-2011 08:04

Re: Never to old!!

Yeah I thought that Margaret, she was lucky that he wernt mental or smacked off his head on drugs and that he actually thought about his actions.................pity it didnt come sooner though and then he wouldnt have been there in the first place!

I think I would step up though if I saw anything like this, but like you Garinda I would feel a bit mad at myself for putting myself in danger. It all depends on how bad it is.
Luckily I havent witnessed anything.

To me this lady had guts but it could have been her epitaph, the eulogy she was made of stern stuff and new right from wrong would have been no good at her funeral, as others have said things are insured and can be replaced lives can't

I would have joined in but I'd just dropped my handbag off at the dry cleaners to get the blood it was covered in from the last robbery I had foiled removed.

If I hit someone with my handbag they would be severely injured.......I carry so much stuff around with me.

Yes, she was foolhardy, but I might have done the same thing.....sometimes the adrenalin takes over....and really this being afraid to step in has helped lead to a society where everyone is happy to 'pass by on the other side'.

Good on the old girl......she had guts!

What an extraordinarily brave old dear, my total respect to her for getting stuck in when more able bodied stood around & watched. She was fortunate not to suffer injury, but it reinforces a more dismaying aspect of the modern society, that of well it's not my concern so why get involved.

I personally have been involved in situations were I have stepped up to intervene in something I find to be wrong. A sense of propriety & ingrained attitudes of right & wrong has overridden my sense of self preservation as many others of a certain generation, mindset & upbringing are also wont to do.

It is only afterwards when the adrenaline surge & the burst of what is fair & righteous has ebbed that we tend to think of possible consequences to our actions. The risks & dangers our civil courage at that moment may have exposed us to are laid bare & cold reality hits home, the possibility of hurt & hospitalization are very real. Still I personally would intervene again as I believe it is just part of my nature.

Foolish maybe, but a part of myself that I can't & won't be separated from as it is ultimately something that defines me.

I remember somebody else who carried a handbag, she was called Margaret.

What a cold hearted bitch she was for ordinary decent folk, but, history can't possibly be about to repeat itself, can it?

Ooh, I don't know Eric......I must check.
There were two bottles of soft drink in there the last time I looked....a couple of bottles of vitamins(need them to carry the bag around)......a purse full of shrapnel.....a screwdriver, nailfile, clippers.....a couple of cloth shopping bags, a couple of plastic ones, a small cellar of salt.......and other amazing trancklements of daily living.

If anyone ever needs anything while we are out...you can bet your life I have it somewhere in my bag.

No......I don't have a lump hammer in there!

Re: Never to old!!

You know, I never thought I would be stupid enough to wade into situations like this .. but have found myself doing it on a few occasions.

I don't understand what happens .. sorta Incredible Hulk type metamorphosis takes over in me and adrenalin takes over brain cells.

Did go for a gang of four youths who were trying to steal my car from the car park at work in Manchester.... even fought with one of them to stop them entering, and clinging on the bonnet as they were drove off successfully. Was found later with £4,000 of damage.

Other incidents have been groups of youths throwing snowballs/missiles at my car and have pulled up and chased them through the park or given them a good telling off.

Last month had a word with a couple in Ossy ripping hell out of each other telling them to keep their noises down ... the boy was OK actually ... just kept saying "Well, it's her, not me".:D

Stupid, stupid, stupid !!! (not bravery) .. just can't help it. Surprised myself.

I know exactly what you mean Kate....there have been times when himself has had to hold me back.

I could say snap there walkinman, when I worked at Martholme Grange, a guy came in one night looking for his girlfriend, when he found her she was dancing with another bloke, he dragged her outside and was knocking seven bells out of her outside the front door, I went to intervene and the woman started clawing at me with her nails shouting leave him alone, I just said carry on and walked away:rolleyes:

Not that big Eric.......it is just soft sided so it accommodates all manner of things.
I emptied it out on the bed earlier today, there was also a sewing kit(with buttons and safety pins) a couple of combs, a magnifying card(the lamps are a bit dim sometimes)......a pair of tweezers, a small pair of scissors. some lip balm and a folding mirror...plus paper hankies.....a couple of pens.....a stub of a pencil......some post it notes.

It would have had a small camera in too...but I had taken it out to put new batteries in it.
