Remember those little brown envelopes you used to take home from school ?
we have been giving aid for over 50 years they must have had billions by now but nothing seams to have changed.

Re: Charity begins-where?

It said on one of the news based shows on the BBC on Sunday morning, that we give £300 million pounds to India.

India, which has it's own foreign aid programme. In which they give away £300 million.

Perhaps we should get an application in to them pronto.

Still, isn't quite as daft of us giving hundreds of thousands in 'foreign aid' to the richest country on the planet, Saudi Arabia, as we have recently.

Don't worry about that Cashy, its just survival of the fittest like voiceofreason said about.

There is an alternative view -
....that mass vaccination is a population reduction excercise.

It all depends whether you consider vaccination beneficial or damaging.

Eric I am guessing you are a religious man and that is why you have deliberatley misunderstood my point. I refer you to my first few words. I have lived in India in the past for 23 years and have seen extreme poverty and hunger, in that time I helped build an orphanage and refurbished a hospital. What have you done? On a side point do you think we should vaccinate anyone from burnley or just fence them in?

Charity begins at home.

We are giving more than any other country......America has declined to give more than the 274 million it is signed up for...and the reasons it gives are stringent financial an budgetary issues in the homeland......shouldn't we try to use that as an excuse.

We give money to countries that have nuclear programs, that have space programs, but they decline to vaccinate their children.
We do not help countries by giving them handouts - they come to depend on the money that is being given as aid.......we foster a dependence in them.
And yes, I know that the povery in these countries is abject poverty....not the kind of poverty we have in this country.......our poor have wide screen TV's, playstations and the like.......but our old people have to sell their homes to provide care.
We treat our criminals better than our old people.
Maybe we should put the criminals into the care homes and put the old folks into the prisons

As a PS to my post #19 -
Bill Gates has donated billions, and here is a quote from him -
"If we do a really great job on new vaccines, healthcare, reproductive health services, we could lower [the population] by perhaps 10 or 15 percent" -- Bill Gates

You're right.

Charity does begin at home.

In our home we are told that money's tight, and we are to go without.

All except the foreign aid budget, which has been increased.

This is wrong.

Give a man a loaf of bread, and he goes to bed with a full belly.

Give a man a hook and some string, he can catch a fish, and then make a macramé necklace afterwards.

He then goes to bed fully nourished, and knowing he has a future as a jewellry designer.

The sad part of foreign aid is that it never gets to the people who need it.

In the world, UK is second after the USA in cash terms. In percent of gross national income (GNI) the UK is seventh. We are top of the league in aid as %GNI for the G8 countries.

Factcheck: Which country gives the most international aid? | Full Fact

It's bizarre when you think about it....at least the people in the poor nations have got nothing. UK citizens have the largest per capita debt on the planet, so are poorer.

Still, we still seem to be able to borrow money to give away and load further debt onto our children to pay back on our behalf. How they are going to do this when the jobs have been exported to many of the aid-recipient nations, plus they will have £50-60k of debt from university, is anyone's guess.

Can we expect Cameron, Clegg and Osborne to dig into their back pockets for us when the proposed exorbitant increases in the costs of our utility bills render the bulk of us impoverished? Maybe we should join with other third world countries (that we ourselves are fast becoming) and hold out the begging bowl!

No, I don't consider myself particularly religious; and I don't deliberately misunderstand anything. But I do recognize Social Darwinism when I see it.

Re: Charity begins-where?

Don't worry, along with the near three hundred million quid we give to space race India, we also donate another £15 million courtesy of the BBC licence fee.

The money is used wisely. For example to employ a bathing beauty queen, to urge others to use johnnies.

How the BBC spends Britain's international aid - Telegraph

As usual our politicans are acting like prefects in some suburban grammar school.

No one is arguing that aid should cease altogether. Just that it should be cut by the same percentage as we face in spending at home.

Sadly, as usual, those sat in the prefects' common room know best. Choosing to ignore what everyone else thinks.
