ANDY's FLORIST'S, Dutton Street, Accrington
 

I was very sad to learn today that Andy's Florist's are to close their Dutton Street premises at the end of this month, although the stall on the outside market will be kept on.
Andy's is part of Accrington's history!

Hi, just got husband to nip me round about 1hr ago, before it got too dark. No cars about, that was a nice change.
Cyfr - might you be able to fill in any history about when your granfather came over, when he started on the outside market, near Peel Street, etc. etc. Any nice family photos we could share perhaps? Cheers! :)

Hello, sorry to bump an incredibly old thread, but I was wondering if anybody knew where to find the article that I think either the Telegraph or Observer did on Andy's Florist closure? I have been looking for it today and can't seem to find anything.. im either using the wrong search terms on the site, or the article dosn't exist and im just imagining things..

Again, the bearer of bad news re Andy's Florist. Unfortunately they are to close the business this coming Mon, 24th Dec 2012. Andy began the business 80 years ago, selling flowers from a stall by the corner of the Market Hall (Peel Street side). Premises were purchased in Dutton Street, where his two sons continued with the business. Over the past few years, they have had an outside market stall, across from Wilkinson's store. Very sorry to hear this news.

Have used em fer many years, always used Dutton St until it closed, wasn't aware the one facing Wilkos was the same, but have used that since Dutton St closed.:(

i can remember when i was a kid going to andys for my harvest box for church everyone else would go wi carrier bags or a box covered wi tin foil id have the wooden box that weighed a ton and all poshed up ..... .. they also did the flowers for my dads funeral back in 1986 ... i bought acouple of bunches of flowers from the market stall 3 weeks ago.... he never said anything. I knew that theyd kept the market stall after shutting the shop.. its part of accys history ...

Always associate that shop with funerals - my mum died in January, she loved flowers and there were lots of freesias around - haven't been able to smell a freesia since without thinking about it and that was 1978.

The shop in Dutton St was used as a location for that comedy series built around Mrs Bucket.

I used the shop regularly too and was dismayed to learn they were closing. It seemed a way of life went when they and all the other little shops I frequented shut their doors for the last time. I used to buy oasis, etc for flower arranging from them which made a cheap bunch of seasonal flowers look special. Even though I'm cutting off my nose to spite my face, I refuse to buy flowers from the supermarket because of their policy of cut pricing local traders and then putting up their prices when the competition has gone to the wall.

Have been into town early this morning, doing my last bits of Xmas shopping (cant get any strawberry blancmange for my trifle anywhere! :() - went past Andy's, so took this photo for posterity!
