Try actually reading the article before you tell people more are closing, NOWHERE in that article does it say more are closing

Re: Pubs

No Bee, you got it right.

The article in the AO begins "Pubs in Hyndburn are closing at a rate of more than one a month". Please note the tense used - present. It does not say 'were' closing. There is nothing in the article to indicate the rate of closures is in any way likely to change.

In fact, after the Wetherspoons opening and recent Tesco/Morrisons off sales, the only question remaining is 'what pubs are next to close?'

Shaz, go back to bed.

Sad news .... I remember them well .... ok, some of them I remember through an alcoholic haze. Here's a weird theory for you: Pubs as social networking. Back in the day, when the world was young and fish and chips were 1/6d, friends used to meet at their designated local (for me it was the Junction, and later, the New Brewery) and shoot the sh ... oops, shoot the breeze.:D But thank the lord, praise JESUS:theband:, now we have Facebook and Twitter. How crude and dated; chatting live with your friends over a pint and a game of darts ... thank god for progress:rolleyes:

Not such a bad idea. In 5 years time when the stadium's built, this pub could be thriving on match days!

Re: Pubs

Most regular pub goers were a bit hedonistic.

Live for today.

Drink, smoke, have a laugh, be happy.

The smoking ban might have cleansed the actual atmosphere, but after hundreds of care free years, they may have well sprayed all the pubs with sodium cyanide.

Same effect.

The Plough on Fielding Lane Ossy reopens on Thursday 25th August.
The bar manager is my stepgranddaughter's boyfriend and from her I have been told that the bar staff have uniforms and customers are required to adhere to a dress code - so no hoodies and track suits etc. allowed.

so Jaysay, don't make the effort to get up the hill - they won't let you in :D

The Plough have just announced this on their facebook page
"Due to an oversight with a minor variation to a premises license we cannot open to the public for another 2 weeks as per Hyndburn Borough Council. Although this is a blow to us, and you our customers it gives us even more time to train our staff and iron out any small bugs.....Hang in their Folks, it will be worth the wait. The add on seems strange, why is HBC at fault, if they didn't know the licencing requirements

It could be the result of action from the P.C. brigade, a name like that might be considered homophobic?

Who can say? P.C. brigades only want to be seen to be correct, they don't really care about different groups living in harmony.

Well spotted, Bee! And shame on the rest of you!

My guess is that this may have originated with Ossy Mills; they've been complaining about the mess for years. Certainly, the theme of what's been plastered up there - the hard graft of mill workers - suggests that.

One problem, though. The stuff got pasted up there yesterday. As of two hours ago, it was already peeling off. Still, I suppose that's the sort of craftsmanship you would expect from Ossy.

A good friend of mine has lived at York Cottage all his life and told me it used to be a pub.

He isn't sure how long ago it was when it closed but his mother lived in the cottage for years before he was born.

The pub was the York Inn and the cottage is just past Broadfield school on the other side of the road.

Does anybody have any information on it and why it was called York Inn.
