Very Strange

Saturday is like any other day for me except that my daughter comes round with my shopping and usually brings me a copy of the Observer. So after I finish trawling Accy Web and other sites, I tend to settle down with a brew and the Obs.

I was quite surprised when I opened the Obs and on the front page was a full page article on HBC increasing charges for funerals. How strange I thought, if this had been 12 months ago, the ink on the paper wouldn't have been dry before a rampant thread running into pages, slagging of Britcliffe and the council, no doubt instigated by Mossy aided and abetted by Bernard and Joan and the world and his wife finding plenty to say, yet not a single word, funny old place Accy Web ain't it:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

And if you can't live longer than it won't be you that has to worry about the increased costs.

Re: Very Strange

It's 'the cuts'.

Think I'll start cutting things off myself, to reduce costs later.

I'll have to find out how much they charge to cremate a foot, hand, etc.

Oh the point that there aren't many posts from Labour councillors, now they're the ruling party.

Conversely it could be said there aren't that many posts, i.e. none, by Conservative councillors...now they aren't in power.

They remain tight lipped, whether they're in, or whether they're out, and make Helen Keller look like a chatterbox.

Maybe they aren't interested in Accy Web, but my point was if the Tories had have done the self same thing it would have been a toss up (whoever got their Obs first) whether Mossy or yourself would have started a thread on it:rolleyes:

Oh right.

I'm supposed to be wearing my Rebel Red label again?

Just a minute, whilst I take off my Right-Wing Bigot badge.

It does get very confusing. Whether I'm supposed to be pro-Labour, or pro-Conservative.

I suppose it depends on which party's policies I'm ridiculing at the time, and therefore which blindly faithful supporters happen to feel aggrieved.

On this issue, not knowing much, besides what was printed in the Observer, it seems a bit of a non-story.

Apparently Hyndburn has historically had the lowest cremation/interment costs in the county. Which are to be increased because of the cuts that need to be made, and this will bring us in line with the rest of Lancashire.

Sounds like an inevitable course of action.

So you can hop back in your budgie cage Little Bluey, because I'd have said exactly the same thing, whoever happened to be in control of H.B.C. at the time this happened.

;)

Nevertheless if it had been the Tories doing it no doubt there would have been a dash on here to ram it down Britcliffes throat, sadly we now seemed to have lost the political antagonists, mind you I don't take any satisfaction from saying I told you so:rolleyes:

As I can only speak for myself, I'll repeat what I've already said. What's happened seems like an inevitability if Hyndburn's costs are that much lower than everywhere else in Lancashire, and savings need to be made to protect other services, and jobs.

I'd have said exactly the same thing if your little chum had still been on the throne.

Quite agree.

Seems like some are a little delusional.

Or perhaps they're just trying to keep the name of their beloved Britcliffe alive, now he's no longer in power.

You know better or should do, no ifs no buts, whether it was inevitable or not Labour and their apologists would have made capital out of it, we might even had the thread called Dying of the fat of the land;)

Which 'Labour apologists'?

Presumably there must be others, seeing as you named myself and Cllr.Moss.

Do try and remember, before attempting to second guess what I might have done if your little chum had held on to power, that I'm not tied by blind party loyalty.

I'm free to speak my own mind, and have no political axe to grind. Unlike some.

If savings need to be made, bringing the borough in line with the costs in the rest of Lancashire, it seems like a no brainer.

Back to posts by politicans.

Now they no longer have control of the council, are we to take it the Conservative councillors who are members of Accy Web, are going to remain mute?

Seems a shame.

Those in oppostition used to have freedom to spout off on here.

Guess we'll just have to make do with their little poodle's yaps.

Then perhaps you shouldn't name me, attempting to guess what I would have posted if H.B.C. was still under Tory control.

Let me spell it out very clearly, so even those blinded by party allegiance can understand.

Given that we are facing cuts, it seems an inevitability that Hyndburn's cremation/interment costs are brought into line with the rest of Lancashire.

I'd have thought much the same whoever happened to control the council when this happened.

As stated earlier I think it's very much a non-story, and certainly not worthy of a front page one.

I'm quite aware of my own shortcomings.

The main one being not suffering fools gladly.

No, it is you who were wrong.

Wrong in suggesting I would have started a thread about this, and created a big fuss, if you're little chum Britcliffe still controlled the council.

I wouldn't.

It was a 'non' story and it certainly didn't deserve the front page coverage that it got. When I read it I felt that it must've been a very poor week in Hyndburn for news, if this is all they could find to fill the front page with.

Nobody 'gets left on top'.
Hygienic disposal is an essential public health matter.
Funeral directors are the 'rip off' merchants.
If the new price of cremations and burials is nearer the actual cost of the service then I approve of the increase.
Relatives will inherit a little less - so what!

DaveinGermany 04-09-2011 13:26

Re: Very Strange

Seems to me it's all about making political capital out of the sorrow of others. If it was one of my kith & kin requiring funereal services I would want the best I could afford for them regardless of the councils "take", I'd not put things on hold & go looking round at other councils to "compare the market".

By using such an emotional event in any way to score politically is just simply obscene & pretty low even by the standards of some politicians, furthermore it adds even more turmoil to an already grieving & upset family.

Just a point of note, the quote below is taken from an article (Accrington Observer 02 Sept 2011) which Rindy posted :-

"Funeral charges, which have gone up by more than £100 in just nine months, have been branded a ‘death tax’.

And the HBC Council changed leadership when ?

I have gathered that you are something of a connosieur!
The first review of this reads (see link):
"Light fluffy lacy head.
Light gold colour.
A round and satisfying bitterness makes this a bit of a clinger. Grapefruit without the intense sweetness but a grown u sweetness. Fairly long coating of dusty chalkiness
Stands and delivers without the extremities of other loud attention seeking .....! Quality."

I don't think it has much to do with the change of leadership. There was a change of Government...and cuts were needed from all aspect of services provided by councils all over the country. It has to do with cuts that were required to be made, that and the fact that the charges had been lower in our borough than anywhere else in Lancashire

That Ma was my point, the increase has been in effect prior to any local change (counting May & labour taking control = 4 Months) so to insist that these changes have been brought about by the present council can't be justified as the increases had begun earlier.(according to the local paper)

So what does that say about the comments made by certain parties on this issue ?

I don't 'fall out' with anyone I happen to disagree with.

I like and respect Jaysay.

However I do think he was totally wrong to name me as someone who'd have a different opinion, if we had a different party in control of the council.

I wouldn't.

I'd think and say exactly the same thing. That what's happened seems an inevitable course of action, given the cuts we're facing, and the disparity in costs with other boroughs in the county.

He can attempt to goad those he sees as his political opponents, those in the red, as opposed to the blue strip.

But when he wrongly posts what I would have done, and refuses to acknowledge that what he posted was incorrect, I'll happily kick him in the virtual nads all day long, until he realises he was wrong in this instance.

As for 'anyone else falling out with me', that really worry me if they did.

Oh for gawd sake lighten up.

Though if you insist in wallowing in some self-delusional mire, trust me, I'll lose no sleep about it.

I'll still be laughing when they've carted you all off to the funny farm.

Time to move on.

I've really no time for those who seem to develop some morbid obsession with me on here.

Go and find someone else, who might care for your interest in their perceived life.

Just a slight tangent here, can you still get away with calling someone Sooty ? Or will you be pounced upon by the righteous ones ?

Epaminondas....well I never! I remember my old school teacher Mrs Armistead telling us some stories on a Friday afternoon.......all aboutEpaminondas. I have never seen these tales written down...or even heard of them from that day to this.
I have just googled it and come up with Epaminondas and his Auntie...........oh, yes and it was about a little black boy.

What memory you two have.I've only just read it and I've forgotten how to spell it already.
Can't see the BBC broadcasting those stories, once so innocent, just stories about a little boy, now time to apologise.

Yes, I do have a fairly good memory. I can remember some things very clearly...so clearly it is like watching a video replay......I have been many places with ma...met many people, and she only has to mention the person or the place and I can recall it like it was yesterday.

and they were good stories......the fact that they were about a boy of ethnicity does not detract from the message one little bit.
