Dog walkers in cemetery
 

Just thought i would run this past you lot on here, whilst in Accrington cemetery the other evening putting flowers on a grave , i noticed several people walking their dogs in the cemetery. Not a problem on the lead but of the eight dogs there, only one was on the lead the others were running free around the graves and headstones , is it just me or is that disrespectful and wrong? Just wondered what people thought of this:(

I personally think its disrespectful, i never take oscar in any cemetary full stop. plus hes never off his lead, though he has a great temperament.

There are plenty of places to walk dogs, a cemetery not being one of them.

Are there no signs up at the entrance about dogs. Mind you if people let their dogs walk round cemetries unleashed they probably can't read anyway

to put it bluntly,unusual fer me i know, if yeh take a dog anywhere theres grass it will sniff around n have a crap simple as, even if the owner picks it up, which i find unlikely when off the lead, it aint very nice fer any poor sod attending a grave.:(

Think there are, Dave. I don't see a problem with dogs being in the cemetary .. on a lead and providing the pooh is picked up (think there are dog bins).

Running loose is not on ... they can do damage to the grass areas and flowers, etc.

Sure there are some people who go to pay their respects to their lost relatives with the dog that the deceased loved when they were alive.

There is a control of dogs order in Hyndburn with a max fine of £1000 for failing to keep a dog on a lead in a Cemetery. Accrington Cemetery is specifically named in the control order.

Details can be found in this Council document NOTICE OF THE MAKING OF THE BOROUGH OF HYNDBURN DOG CONTROL (DOGS ON LEADS) ORDER 2008

What we need is for the Council to enforce this control order and they may need reminding by people reporting dogs off leads in these areas.

There are plenty of open spaces to walk dogs, so why a cemetery, maybe because its the nearest place to take them, but with or without a lead I don't think a cemetery is the place to exercise a dog

I think its disrespectful to let them run around off the lead. Once saw a couple of elderly ladies sat on a bench whilst their dog ran amongst the gravestones in Accy Cemetery, not a good example from people that should know better at their age.

You got it right KATEX the problem is not with dogs but with their owners. We talk about training dogs but it is the onwners who need training. I can take my lab anywhere without fear of offending. Exercising ie running around after a ball or swimming should only be done in appropriate places.

I personally dont like being at the cemetery when dogs are around.

A couple of years ago when I pressed for red dog bins near me, I found that the Environmental Health team and the dog warden responded quickly, and began monitoring the problem, eventually getting two bins installed.

Dogs off leash will be a dog warden's problem I expect.
There is a different dog warden now. I don't know whether he is as good as the last one.

Think thats a good idea neil thanks for passing that on , it just seemed wrong for these owners to be letting their dogs trog around off the lead . I forgot to mention that one couple had come in a car to let the dogs have the run of the cemetery,couldnt believe that when i saw them. They were old enough to know better too, or so you would think.

I know a gentleman who has very strong views on this subject. He believes that each and every time people are prosecuted for dog fouling (and I am sure he would have a strong view on this as well) that they should be named in the local paper to discourage other dog owners. His feelings as to why this does not happen is because no one is ever successfully prosecuted/fined for it.

( I hope he does not read this or he will be sat with a smug grin on his face next time I see him :D )

Last time I heard the figures he was not very far off the mark.

The council is strapped for cash so why not take some off irresponsible dog owners and clean up the borough at the same time. Sound like a win win situation no one would disagree with except those fined for fouling/breach of the dog order I linked to above.

If the warden had an outpost looking through my kitchen window the prosecution rate in Hyndburn would increase, some people think the grassed areas around our flats a specified dog toilets:mad:

I didn't even know this practice was going on. It is an insult of the highest order.

Anyone caught taking their dogs into a cemetary should be made to eat them, as they do in China (or at least they did, before the politically correct, animal loving brigade got involved).

I think is totally dispectful to allow dogs to roam freely in cemetries cocking their legs where they want. when we go to visit my in laws grave in Clitheroe Cemetry I always leave my dog in the car.

I think the issue about dogs in cemeteries has to be tempered with common sense, dogs are a comfort especially in times of bereavement. If a dog is on a lead and cleaned up after then no harm is done. if you want to rant about something, rant at the vandals that push over headstones, people in cars that park on the grass, the people who use cemeteries as a short cut and throw cans and other rubbish about. the vanishing amount of land left to bury the dead, and the rising cost of dying.

The people walking their dogs are the ones who do it 99% of the time, not the odd one grieving for a loved one, of course any of the things you mentioned are totally unacceptable in any society, but in any shape or form cemeteries are not the place to walk a dog, because went people are out of site they think they don't need to pick up after their dog

I used to work in the cemetery so know the problem first hand, the problem is with the enforcment of the rules. A few £1000 fines would focus the attitude of careless dog owners an not stigmatise the whole dog walking community. You say dog owners use the grass outside of your house, so it is not any specific location it is borough wide. enforce the dog fouling laws right accross the board, and encourage responcible dog ownership. When I worked in the cemeteries it was my place of work, and fouling would not be tolerated in any other place of work, but I would not ban dogs in the cemetery. I would ban the owners who let the dogs foul and not clean up after, owners choose what to do and where to go, do we chastise people we see letting their dog foul or just tut and walk away, or watch from afar and do nothing.:dflam:

ps. I have a dog, and I clean up if I am watched or not.

Excellent post and I agree there is nothing wrong with responsibly walking a dog in a cemetery . The word here is responsibility which is lacking from some dog owners.

My original post said on a lead i dont have a problem , but dogs running free should not be allowed in a cemetery full stop, either by the bereaved or just irresponsible dog owners.As for the vandals etc they should be birched for the desecration of graves, they are scum plain and simple.I am afraid this sort of behaviour by dog walkers, vandals is unfortunately endemic of our sad and broken society , where respect for others ,property and rules are now non existant

Sounds like a great idea, 5 minutes in the dark room with no PC for every post you make. You have 25,748 (unless I delete a few ) which is

25748 * 5 minutes = 128740 Minutes

128740 /60 / 24 = 89.4 Days.

I was told today that some have moved to Rhyddings Park.
