I've heard this as well but put it down to a vicious rumour. What retail boss in their right mind would come up with that rule?

Re: Who owns Bodycare and Poundworld?

I have just had a quick search and what I can find it is a company called - Warburg Pincus.

Apparently they are a US company.

I am disgusted that they have stopped employee's wearing them.

Re: Who owns Bodycare and Poundworld?

Bodycare is apparently owned by GR & MM Blackledge which are based in Preston.

If that's the case, it should be made known and let people taken the appropriate action, steering clear:mad:

A quick Google found the following excerpt from 'The Holy Bible according to jaysay'. It seems Bodycare have been banning the wearing of poppies since 2009 at least.

Bodycare is owned by husband and wife Graham and Margaret Blackledge, whose wealth has been estimated at £40million, and is based in Preston, Lancashire. It has more than 1,600 staff.

Was it Poundworld or Poundland? Google found this (yet again in jaysay's Bible).

Re: Who owns Bodycare and Poundworld?

I've heard of both these outfits before. Warburg Pincus is private equity investment company and I'm pretty sure it has it's offices just off Piccadilly in London. I'm sure I knew a lass that worked for 'em and I've also got a recollection that they once tried to buy Liverpool FC. I think their London office is a subsidiary of their main Yank operation.

As for Bodycare, wasn't this lot in the news about two or three years ago when they tried to pull exactly the same stunt and after the outcry they reversed the decision? There may even have been a thread about it on here.

If you read the story in the paper its appears simple enough, they dont allow any charity badges, pins, bands etc so they can not be accused of being biased to any one organisation. They only backed down so as not to lose customers.

Re: Who owns Bodycare and Poundworld?

Disgusting.

Will still be disgusting if/when they cave into public pressure, and allow poppies to be worn by their employees.

I feel sorry for the staff, who may have their jobs put at risk if there's a prolonged boycott, and may suffer more than those who made this despicable decision.

Actually spoke about something similar tonight, at a family dinner.

Young lad asked how it was his Grandma had written a letter of complain to someone last year, and why.

She explained that it was to the Co-op head office, after they'd refused to serve a soldier in uniform, in some garrison town in the south. She told them if lads we're being killed to protect this nation, they should have the decency to allow them to buy a few beers, whilst home on leave.

As this woman being questioned, my Mum, was born four months after her Dad was killed, fighting in Normandy, things like this means they're always going to be on a lose/lose situation with her, and us, her two sons.

She turned into a screaming Banshee when a sports bar attached an advertising board to Ossy war memorial, and caused hacvoc in there.

If she hears about this she'll probably be so incensed, she start on a window smashing spree, nevermind a boycott.

Presumably they refuse to serve customers who wear any of these items because they don't want their money

Yeah.

Hypocrisy is nearly as bad as the decision to ban poppies in the first place.

Sad, when it's only falling profits that can prick consciences.

Where are all the human rights lawyers?

There's usually loads come a running, willing to fight for an individual's right to wear a veil, or some other worn item, that signifies a particular message.

Suprised Cherie Blair's not on it already.

I'm off into town later I shall make a point of visiting said shops to see if its true, and report back. Wouldn't it be awful if someone drew giant poppies on said shops windows.

Staff in both poundland & poundworld are wearing poppies, staff in bodycare are not, when I asked if they have been banned from wearing them lady said no, they just haven't got one, told them off & to go & buy one!

Seems odd that wallop re- bodycare:confused: the info came from a family member, who was told by a member of the staff of bodycare? unless they have been put in unenviable position by the owners. i have just been talking to the poppy seller stood across from the said shop, he was telling me that its the first time fer 3 yrs they have been allowed in the arndale, seems the new owners don't object to em selling yon, in fact he said the owners contacted em n invited em to come.

I also saw the staff were wearing them today, as management have apparently caved in, thanks to the public outrage.

People power!

Though any employer who was half-way decent, wouldn't have forbidden their employees from wearing poppies in the first place.

I just wonder what any employer in their right mind would make such a stupid rule in the first place, first rule in business don't upset the paying public, they usually show their dissent with their feet, walking past the door

Just looking at something on Facebook & it has named certain shops that have banned staff from wearing poppies, one of which it named as The Bodyshop, think as I earlier suggested about Chinese whispers someone has picked Bodycare instead of The Bodyshop.

Bodycare ban staff poppies | The Sun |News as it was company policy 2 years ago,i doubt very much if was chinese whispers. that article was also in the Mail.Independant, Telegraph, n on BBC News.

This newspaper article is from 2 years ago, I asked the lady member of staff in Bodycare yesterday if they had been banned & she said NO, she even said that was 2 years ago, but they backed down after the public outcry, she just said don't know why none of us are not wearing them its not good is it, jokingly told her & the other staff off & to go buy one, maybe that's why they were wearing them today because I or maybe someone else pricked their conscience.

What i find odd is the fact that a member of staff told a family member as i posted, yet another member has told yeh the opposite, yet you say others are chinese whispers? how does that work?

wallop79 08-11-2011 21:47

Re: Who owns Bodycare and Poundworld?

Cashy the only reason I went into Bodycare yesterday was to see if what you had put on here was true & if so to get off the staff who to complain to, I can only repeat what she told me that they haven't been banned from wearing poppies. I made a point of walking past Poundland & could clearly see staff wearing poppies so I didn't need to go in there, then I went into Poundworld & again could clearly see staff wearing poppies. Anyway all that matters are people are wearing them, all we need now are the England football team to do the same & shove two fingers up to Sepp.

cashman 08-11-2011 21:56

Re: Who owns Bodycare and Poundworld?

aint bitching about yeh checking,in fact think thats good, but we both are only repeating what members of staff said, thats the bit i don't get, the fact that opposite to what you were told, the other is chinese whispers? the England team by the way are only wearing poppies on warm up jerseys, wi black-armbands during the game, seems the corrupt pig blatter has won again.

Re: Who owns Bodycare and Poundworld?

I know u wernt bitching Cashy, like ya say its odd, but they're wearing em now, sorted!
